thomas gainsborough‘s paintings are as well stop thomas gainsborough was one of the most famous portraittraits, painted in 1770. he was the most important british artist of the second half of the 18th century. yet few of his early drawings were thought to have survived — until now. they‘ve lain undiscovered in this album, on a shelf here in the print room at windsor castle, for more than a hundred years. in 1874 queen victoria wrote to the studio of edwin landseer asking if she could have some of his drawings, he‘d died the previous year. and she was sent two albums of drawings, and she then had them bound up into this victorian binding, and it‘s been kept here in the royal library at windsor castle since that time. and so, perhaps, it‘s no wonder that the 25 chalk sketches inside the album were thought to be by landseer. and then the historian lindsay stainton was sent a box of photos of the drawings, and she decided a big mistake had been made. i was looking at boxes and boxes of photographs, and i thought, "oh, i'lljust have a look through these." and ijustjumped up from my chair, and
