that's thomas jefferson. in an absolutely shocking passage in his notes on the state of virginia, he compares wheatley with roman poets who were enslaved like terrence and says that wheatley's poetry is beneath contempt. essentially that no black people can write poetry because black people are intellectually inferior. he said, he ventures this is a suspicion only. the degree of his racism is shocking. it's not shared by washington or franklin who claimed her genius or many of the other founders. it reveals the fact that jefferson's hypocrisy on slavery was both rooted in racism that was unusual even by the standards of his time and also in his avarice. it's really important to ask the question, how was it that these founders who claim to be so devoted to virtue and self-mastery and virtues like industry and frugality could rely on in slave labor to make their lifestyles possible? what was so striking to learn is that they didn't even try. this is -- there's this amazing quotation by patrick henry where he gi

people in rural areas that they who were considered kind of the heart of the american story, thomas jefferson's chosen children of god were being supply entered by an urban story story and, a place where living in the city seemed like an increasingly sophisticated thing to do. and farmers who once had been seen as the backbone of america are portrayed by some in the cities as kind rubes. and there is a growing urban rural divide divide. and it's going to play out in a lot of ways ways. cities in the late 19th century, people went there because there were jobs, immigrants went there because that's where they landed. but they were tough. the number of people arriving completely, the infrastructure pollution, sewage problems, horse manure everywhere. it was not pretty. but as a result of a movement known, as the progressive movement, at the turn the 19th into the 20th century, cities had been cleaned up. improvements in housing and sewer and parks and playgrounds and sanitary ocean and changes in the form of government to make them more efficient. and germ being applied to clean up cities. you can

thomas jefferson, being from virginia, takes it personally. all right. so we a lot of people tend to think about the revolution as a new england thing, a northern thing like started with militia men in and around maybe something like that. and then, i don't know, we got to yorktown in washington one. right. that's kind of how a lot of people think of it. but in fact the southern campaign of the american was the decisive campaign of the entire conflict. you could see from the map on the left that the majority of that conflict took place in the carolinas, but certainly native throughout the southeast were kind of enveloped into this because there are going to be raids and things that are happening in florida. you're going to have raids, events that are going to be occurring, the mississippi river and in places in and around louisiana. and so all of the southern native nations are to wind up kind of caught up this. and they have to make decisions about who to support. and these decisions were universal just. like as colonists, we're having to make decisions

the beef of the critics comes not with me but with thomas jefferson's reading list. i just read the books that jefferson says influenced his understanding of the pursuit of happiness as well as all the other sources that use the phrase the pursuit of happiness. to take the christian sources, it's very important to recognize that williston and to liston and the greatest and most celebrated christian zealots of their time all site back to cicero. they saw no contradiction between christian thought and reason. the whole project of what was called the reasonable christian or latitude in marion was to insist that a focus driven life could be achieved by reason and reflection, not by peer authority or religious dogma. all of the founders -- also they had very great differences in their degrees of allegiance to traditional denominations. washington and hamilton to some three -- degree are more traditionally practicing of christianity than jefferson and even franklin. all reject what jefferson calls the monkish superstition that would take ideas of virtue from religious autho

the system we know of from federalists and anti-federalists with people like john adams and thomas jefferson james madison and so on, and the second party system had yet to be created with people like andrew jackson and henry clay and those guys and eventually abraham lincoln. so, this was a moment of transition where no one knew what was going to happen. the country was approaching its 50th anniversary, and that was something of an achievement, because everyone knew america was an experiment. that's the word that was often used. would the experiment work? would we make it to 1826? and that also meant, would the values of the founding fathers continue on in the new generation? so, there was a lot of concern about that, even regardless of the sectionalism, just were we continuing the story that we had started in 1776? so, monroe invited lafayette under those circumstances, that he was the figure of unity. he was a living -- and some scholars will actually use this term, relic of the american revolution as the positive sense, not that he was decrepit, but that he was a living reminder, a walke
