"one staff person said she thought i had been rude. my feeling was that they asked my opinion and i gave it." and it doesn't end there. fox executive vice president michael clement tells the hollywood reporter when mr. ricks ignored the anchor's question and it became clear that his goal was to bring attention to himself and his book, he apologized in our office

. >>> right now i do want to bring in thomas rick, senior fellow at the center for new american security. latest book title "the generals: american military command from world war ii to today." among those generals, of course, david petraeus. also contributing editor for foreign policy as well. thomas, thank you so much for coming in. you write today that a source told you that president obama tried to talk general petraeus out of resigning. we just heard the same thing from john harwood as well. tell me what you're hearing. >> well, first of all, there aren't going to be any criminal charges in this. this is really a tempest in a teapot. the sad thing is general petraeus is probably the most famous general we've had since world war ii. here is a guy who did a terrific job in both iraq and then had a harder time, but still served well in afghanistan. the idea that somebody would be out in the desert for six and a half years and slips somehow with a personal indiscretion, what we approved here is the david petraeus is a human being. i think it also says a lot more about us as a country th

i compare that to the total carelessness about the deaths of security contractors in iraq. >> thomas rickstes a blog on foreign policies website. ricks. foreignpolicy.com. he is the author of many books, including a new book called "the general's." mike inar from kentucky, republican. caller: good morning. i think this is a very interesting conversation. i am retired, a 24-year senior nco, and i have served under the petraeus command. my comment is that you cannot actually have a conversation on military ethics when you're fighting a war of aggression. it is naturally agreed a conflict of interest. would you find in a senior command, like field officers like general petraeus, these guys are caught in a catch-22. once they receive their wanda starke, they are sent to charm school -- once they receive their one star, they're taught appropriate procedures in charm school. they sit in hearings and panels. they had entered a lot of careers -- they had ended a lot of careers of officers over the same behaviors. when i hear about these guys, you know, general petraeus has four combat deployments.
