[applause] major robert o'dell owens is a politician and prominent member, i hope i have this right, it democratic socialism of america. democratic socialist have all my respect. we all know him though as the representative, the house representative from brooklyn who replaced shirley chisholm. he has been a very, very important voice, representation for us in the united states congress. he has been a member of the congressional progressive caucus in addition to the black congressional caucus. he is also an author and a major figure that the popular television, the west wing, have a character that almost certainly is based on major owens, mark richardson. some things you may not know is he is also nicknamed the wrapping wrap because he writes rap. he is an important writer and thinker in black political satire and and nonfiction and he is now a faculty member in the department of public administration at medger evers college. representative major owens. justices were quite clearly seen as political actors, and if justice alito, justice thomas, and particularly, chief justice roberts are going to continue to comment publicly in whatever fashion, on the other branches, or the propriety of what the other branches may be saying or doing, then i think that there is a long-term cost to the credibility of the court. we don't believe that they are purified by the putting on of judicial robes. we don't believe that anymore, but we want to believe that and we don't like to think of the justices as raw political actors who are juries comment -- just commenting, as mitch mccounselor might on what the other branches are doing. >> let's move to questions. we have a gentleman with a microphone. we only ask that you stand up when you speak and speak into the microphone so our c-span viewers can hear you and see you. >> when that last supreme court ruling came down about the corporate giving, i was very much enraged and i thought i'm going to send a letter off, but then i thought, i can't send this to the supreme court, because they're not going to even bother with my opinion. am

nine others, alan, john, thomas, dean, joseph, donald, james, robert, douglas were injured at the noontime rally. these students were exercising their right guaranteed by the u.s. constitution to freely assemble and descent from their government. the kent state shootings were followed 10 days later by the shootings of two students protesting at jackson state college in mississippi. the tragedy at kent state has had a broad residence in american history. richard nixon's former chief of staff wrote in his books that the kent state shootings began the slide into the watergate crisis, eventually dooming the nixon presidency. the shootings led to an uptick in student protests across the country which prompted richard nixon to push for a series of unconstitutional moves to target his political enemies. these culminated in the watergate break in and two years later the kent state university. they have a number of resources to honor the students shot on may 4, 1970. the university has established the may 4 memorial, the marker, individual student markers and cholarships in honor of allison, jeffre

justices scalia, kennedy and thomas had previous expressed they think that is unconstitutional. this case suggestion that justice roberts and alito will likely be with them. what will that mean if corporations and companies can contribute money, not just spend money independently? are there five votes to say that all restrictions on corey buickses are unconstitutional. one of the pillars of buckley case in 1976 is that the government can restrict contributions, but not expenditures. here the supreme court has expressed the view that that aspect of buckley should be overruled. my guess is there are five votes for that. it is notable that in citizens united, the court upheld the disclosure requirements by an 8-1 margin. i think the case is important on a injures prudence level. what does this say about precedent in the roberts court? in january of 2003, the supreme court, mcconnell versus the federal election commission upheld the same thing. what changed over seven years? did the court find some musty history that led it to believe it made a miss take? >> no, it was 5-4. justice owe connor had been replaced by justice al
