i'm thomas roberts and it is a busy morning so far. i want to get straight to it because we have a lot to talk about in the first major hurricane to threaten the u.s. in 30 years is now a category 3 storm. moments ago we saw a new advisory from the national hurricane center about the path of irene packing top winds of 115 miles per hour. this storm is growing stronger as it cuts a path through the caribbean. it is expected to make landfall in north carolina's outer banks this weekend. meteorologist mike bettes is tracking the storm in the weather channel's headquarters in atlanta. mike, bring us up to speed. what kind of impact can we expect on the east coast? >> thomas, all eyes are focused on this one because we do anticipate some potentially very serious impacts. i'm going to bring you the latest stats. 150-mile-an-hour winds, that's not changing. northwest movement at 12, so it's not nearly as much of a westerly component as it is a northerly component, just now coming through the bahamas, turks and caicos getting hit very hard her

i'm thomas roberts. we get right to it talking about irene and the devastation from that flooding. the death toll now stands at 40. federal officials are sending teams to take stock of the damage this morning. in vermont, the fema chief is flying over the worst flooding that state has seen in some 83 years. entire towns remain swamped, hindering rescue efforts to reach people trapped in their homes. this is the scene in a number of towns in new jersey and throughout the northeast. rescue teams wading through washed out streets, getting to residents any way they can to help. millions along the eastern seaboard still remain without power. for the atlantic coast and its residents, it's all about repairing and rebuilding today as we learn that the staggering cost of this storm could top $12 billion. this morning, our correspondents are in place all along the east coast from vermont to north carolina. we want to start this morning in vermont with nbc's ron allen, who's in brattleboro. ron, with over 250 roads that are washed out, explain how rescuers are doing what they can to reach the

i'm thomas roberts and we're following the breaking news that's coming to us out of virginia tech thisthe campus is on lockdown after reports from three summer campers there on the virginia tech campus in blacksburg, that they saw a gunman on campus this morning. they gave a description -- a white man with light brown hair, 6 feet tall, wearing a blue and white striped shirt, gray shorts, brown sandals. he was described as clean-shaven, according to the university's website. we're taking a look on the left-hand side of your screen there is from a web cam from the virginia tech campus, where we've seen some activity, people walking by, some people on bikes, other police vehicles that have been driving by. however, the campus remains on lockdown. virginia tech notified people this morning on their home page and through facebook, posting the following alert, saying "a person with a gun reported near dietrick. stay inside. lock doors. emergency personnel responding. call 911 for help." a short time ago, we heard from blacksburg police officials and campus officials, saying they consider th

robert lucas went on to become the territorial governor of ohio -- iowa, and in that capacity we begin to return to thomas jefferson. a lucas had a quest. he was quite a character. i would like to take a moment to read you three excerpts from the times of robert lucas. the first is from the cleveland harold in 1838. so this is after he has one dispute with michigan and then just been appointed to become the territorial governor. one of the most deserving men in the party, and we don't not. he is an old-fashioned and honest and intelligent western pioneer. nice. the second is a letter that lucas wrote many years earlier during the war of 1812 when he was a young officer. he wrote this letter to a fellow officer. what is important to keep in mind, the words you're hearing, he put them in writing. never was there in more patriotic climate. more completely in their power to accomplish every object of their desire and the present. it must now be signed in disgrace for want of a general. shamefully opposed by it and the soul of a treacherous commander. first of all, the grammar is not perfect because this man m

justice roberts that era's justice roberts started ruling with roosevelt because the politics of the earth so affected you know we now have a couple of justices justice thomas whose wife is very involved in politics and justice scalia this has participated in fact the two of them participated in several called brother funded events. is there a precedent is there a history of supreme court justices not just being partisan i know some of them come out of the senate for example and things like that but actually be participating in activist types of ads and if so does. that happened on both conservative side the liberal side and what's going on with it right now this story really it has happened from time to time on both sides and just as douglas for example i came under fire for his partisan political activities he was very interesting becoming president of the united states and did some not so subtle agitation toward that end having failed in that he thought it might be interested in becoming roosevelt's vice president in one nine hundred forty four again this was not a secret and later in his life he could be very outspoken about a number of issues justice g
