thomas roberts live on the ground in moore, oklahoma. thanks for that, thomas. >>> and for more on the tornado and why this part of the country is so prone to severe weather, we turn to the weather channel's mike seidel who is also in oklahoma for us. mike, good morning. what can you tell us about why this part of the country, known as tornado alley, gets so many of these kinds of storms? >> well, simply you have to have the ingredients. you have to have cold air aloft. that's inherently unstable when you have the warm tropical air coming out of the gulf of mexico. throw in the jet stream winds. different wind directions. the surface winds from the southeast as we had a couple of days ago and then the upper level winds. they veer with height from the southeast to the southwest to the west and northwest. you have that spin in the atmosphere and you are out here in tornado alley. you are in probably easily the most susceptible area in the entire planet for tornadoes because we have the gulf of mexico. we have the hot dry air coming out of t

joining me right now from moore, oklahoma, msnbc's thomas roberts. and thomas, i see some folks in the background of the shot. we've been seeing them all day as we've been watching what's going on unfold. what are people doing right now in the aftermath of this? are they returning to their homes? are they out of the area? what are folks trying to do today on the day after this disaster happened? >> reporter: well, right now, chris, it is a beautiful contradiction here in moore, oklahoma because the evening is absolutely perfect. but as we look around, it's complete devastation after a little over 24 hours now we know that that tornado that ripped through here is categorized as an ef-5. as you bring up the people, there's a young couple behind me, nathan and amber crysel who rode out the storm in their bathtub. this is the first time back to their home this evening. that's amber, the blonde, behind me. she's talking about the bathtub which is right to the right-hand side of that toilet, if you can make that out over my shoulder. but she was in that bat

i want to go to thomas roberts. he's live in moore, oklahoma. thomas, i know you've been there overnight. describe what you're seeing, what you have seen, and tell me where you're standing right now. >> reporter: chuck, good morning to you. we are standing in a suburb residential neighborhood here in moore. moore being a suburb of oklahoma city. as you can see behind me, what was a beautiful residential street is now just completely wrecked by what came through here yesterday. you'll notice that on several of the homes, something that became very popular during katrina, the xs that are spray painted on the structures themselves, meaning that they've been cleared, to make sure no one's there. in the last hour, we had an opportunity to speak with the gentleman who was living in this house with his wife. he was at home at the time, his wife was at work. they all got out okay. but chuck, interestingly enough. people in this neighborhood right now, just over a few block, they're actually pitching tents in their front yards to make sure they're not goi

i'm thomas roberts in for tamron hall.erman murder trial. at a pretrial hearing the judge denied a request for a delay in the start of that trial which will begin on schedule june 10th. zimmerman who has pleaded not guilty and claims he shot trayvon martin in self-defense was not in that courtroom today. the judge considered dozens of motions by both the florida prosecutor's office and zimmerman's legal team. among them, judge deborah nelson ruling the defense will not be able to make mention of a number of details about trayvon martin's past. in their opening statements. those details which the defense claims shed light on martin's character including his possible prior marijuana use, his suspension from school and text messages. >> the state is seeking to prohibit the defense from making any reference to the fact that trayvon martin had at any time been suspended from school. >> it will not be mentioned at all without a prior ruling of the court. >> any communications or evidence that trayvon martin had used marijuana in

i'm thomas roberts. it's the news topping our agenda today, poison plot. in the last hour we learned more about the message contained in the letters. the letter was intercepted at a mail sorting facility here in manhattan, the other opened by the president of the mayors against illegal guns at their office in washington, d.c. everyone who came in contact with the letters have either been checked and treated, listed as okay now, but those letters have louisiana postmarks. both were identical in content, containing warnings that arrived for bloomberg and his group that directly called them out for the gun control debate and their interference with gun reform. now, sources telling our affiliate wnbc the letter said in part, quote, what's in the letter is nothing compared to what i've got planned for you. >> i'm not angry. there are people who i would argue do things that may be irrational, do things that are wrong, but it's a very complex world out there and we just have to deal with that. >> president obama echoed mayor blomburg's call to continue the gun co

. >> msnbc's thomas roberts is still in moore. thomas, what is the latest on the ground?> well, from that same press conference, we learned janet napolitano was certainly supportive of what folks in moore are going through. but from local officials, we learned there are six individuals that they are actively searching for. the mayor, one of his staffers said that their goal is to go through every house and every car at least three times. so that a big task for people that are apparently missing. they are still waiting to find out more details, probably from family members, that maybe they can maybe alleviate the six people off the list. but we will wait to see official word from that. this is the first time we've ever gotten a rough tally of them making an announcement of people they are actively seeking at this point. as we do know, 24 confirmed individuals perished. ten of which today are children. that number was lesser earlier. but they have confirmed there were two infants that perished in that deadly tornado. we are also learning more about how people are rebounding

i'm thomas roberts, and this is msnbc's continuing live coverage of the oklahoma tragedy. the tornado that ravaged businesses and homes alike. it's a new day in the city and one where people are coming together in a true sense of community but also in a true sense of grief. daybreak in moore has brought us images that are truly impossible to believe. parts of this town have literally been wiped off the map. take a look back as this monster storm touched down on the ground yesterday afternoon. >> i've never heard a roar like that before. oh, my god. it's going to go just to our north! very large, heading into moore, oklahoma. >> because this was such an immense and ravaging storm, the results of the casualties and fatalities, that's been a fluid number, but the newest numbers have been lowered as we have them right now at this hour, according to the medical examiner, 24 people confirmed killed. other agencies telling us as many as 50 people may have died because of the storm. we expect the numbers to rise. more than 100 people have been found alive. there is hope, and the s
