hack-a-thon and destruction have negative connotations. today, we are embracing those as positive ideas. -- disruption have negative connotations. we have to change government, we have to change the way we think. i have been thinking through the night. it is much less about technology but the way that we think. i need to disrupt the way we have been thinking and start innovating our way out of this. i could sit back and cry about what jerry brown's budget will present to us, or what obama cannot do in this new administration, the things that are going to go on. or i could say, i am going to work with the most innovative part of our society, people who want to help the government to better. we have really positive things to do and be positive about the way we run government. that is what i want to get to. i know the board of supervisors want to get to that as well. we need to find solutions, and this is a way to invite people who are interested in doing it. >> [inaudible] if it would actually create jobs, it would get things done. >> i woul

the senate is currently in session right now adjusting for actually participating in a vote-a-thon. the current extension expires on march 31 of 2012, said the countdown has really begun to see if there will be another continuing resolution that will get us through the end of the current federal fiscal year or that will give reauthorization before any election in the fall. the current structure of the house bill retains the basic funding levels. the bill might pass in the senate as currently being proposed to be amended, but it is unlikely to pass in the house. there is unlikely to be either a new bill in the house that is a shorter term than the five-year measure that is currently proposed, for there might be amendments to the current proposal -- or there might be amendments to the current proposal. the house is out of session for the rest of the week. they returned on march 19 to begin debates again, whether they will proceed with the revised five-year bill or change it to two-years. as i'm sure you are aware, one of the key problems with the five-year proposal is the funding sour

over the past year, i have attended a number of hack-a- thons, and was impressed about the ideas of howo fix muni, making our commercial buildings greener, using vacant spaces, figuring out how to catch cabs. in the last couple of months, i figured out how we can legislate this as part of san francisco. mayor lee had a better idea, which was to partner with code of america to utilize the non- profit and private sector to come together with entrepreneurial minds. i want to figure from conaway for your leadership, not only helping to cede some of the greatest part we have here in the city, and working with a community that wants to work with the government. we have talked about in gauging the technology community and innovators to make city government better. i also want to take a moment to graduate the mayor for making a great decision for creating this position. a couple of weeks ago, i was reading york city was contemplating a similar position like this, and i meant to come and tell you, you should create the position. lo and behold, here we are. he has really been driving innovation i

we had a hack-a-thon at the company where we allowed people to participate and just hack something together using these skills. and we had -- like i said, we have all the engineers and the product people but we also have the accountants and the finance people, and they're teaming up. and out of that we came up with a new process for deploying software to the site which we've never had before, which is fantastic, and a new mobile app that we're rolling out next week at south by southwest which we're really excited about. all came out of this improvisational techniques. what i'll saying about google is google says go ahead and do what you want for 20% of the time. what we're doing is we're trying to give you skills to use during that time. right? that's the difference between this. we've been very focused on sort of narrowing skills, how to problem solve, how to find the wheat, you know, from the chaff. what we didn't do is sort of how to plant seeds. and this is a skill that lets you plant seeds so that you can then harvest. you need both. and we were very harvesting and not a lot of plannin
