. >>> right now firefighters are battling a massive fire outside of palm springs, california, making it worse. thoses are dealing with dangerously hot temperatures. miguel is there for us. miguel, good morning, what is the latest? >> alax, good morning. just after 4:00 a.m. here and getting closer to 5:00 a.m. and already 85 degrees here in palm springs. we certainly expect it to be triple-digit heat. that blaze is certainly on the move and so will be firefighters later on this afternoon. they'll use the city's air tram system which is usually a very visual scene for the public. this fire is being mostly attacked from the air, some 29 helicopters have been flying across a 40 square mile swath of land and the burn zone here is huge because this area is so ripe to burn. the hillsides haven't been scorched in decades. the fire is explosive and the potential is huge and for the most part, most of the major communities and idyllwild, the two biggest communities under threat are not in imminent dangers because firefighters have been laying so many a miles of fire break here. tough day, though, on the fire

palm springs. there's several houses in jeopardy here because of this fire burning. you can see those houses all within the area there, and all of the houses are a concern for the firefighters here. that gives you an idea of how dry the trees are out there, a very dangerous situation. look at some video from earlier today. this 27,000-acre brush fire is still burning out of control. a state of emergency has been declared for the city in the path of this fire. 6,000 people have been evacuated because of the fire throughout the week, and 700 of those people just today have been evacuated. more than 5600 homes are in the path -- potentially in the path of this fire tonight. there's 68 crews on the ground, over 20 helicopters trying to fight this fire. i did check tonight and i can tell you right now this fire is about 20% contained, and firefighters are fearing that thunderstorms coming into the area could pose more of a problem. >>> we have low clouds to deal with for tonight. here is a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. it's hard to see because it's dark. there's low clouds tonigh
