stevens had actually seen thurgood marshall in the court. can you tell us a bit about that and what impact it had on justice stephen? >> there is along a legacy of action in the supreme court and others in the lamb bleating that to be brought the board of education decision of 1954. in fact books have been written about that. the 1954 decision was obviously landmarked there were many cases that came along. it had to do with a woman that wanted to go to law school in oklahoma under the separate but equal doctrine may literally set up a law school for her. she was the only student in eight and it was said she didn't have to go to school with the white students. this whole sort of thing was not common. you have to cast your mind back to that period in the federal courts of all and so on and so forth he got up and presented these cases with such a strident way are doing the cases that eventually overtime it did lead to the board of education and justice stevens as a private attorney had dealings with the thurgood marshall when he was a solicitor

they are at thurgood marshall right now as well as philip burton. mondays and tuesdays, two hours a day, tutorials on thursdays. youth have the a opportunity to earn up to the $599 stipend. we will start that with the second semester. this semester, we are doing tutorials stuff, goal-setting stuff. we're heavily incentivizing the program. there will be field trips. we will feed them everyday. we're working in conjunction with the school district at both sites. staff has attended curriculum training from the district. tutors have received training. we realize and recognize the fact that if we are going to make this work and continue for the success, we need to be closely intertwined with the district and their goals and what they're doing with their students each day. a couple of charts and graphs to put in this, i did e-mail a final report to members of the school board as well as implementation committee. i can also send a copy as well. a couple of questions that were asked when i presented when we first had begun the program was the ethnicity. we

we visited thurgood marshall high school, lincoln high school, san francisco international high-school. we saw varying levels of support. at least one of the high schools, there were over 100 newcomers, which was great. it was not necessarily the same at all of the schools we observed. what we found was that it was challenging for the staff to have many levels of english proficiency at their sites. and they found that there was not enough support from the district. this came from the parents that we were able to meet. we purposely organize our business so that we would meet with these parents as much as possible. there was also an issue that we saw that the chinese and spanish-speaking populations or not necessarily getting the translation and support they needed so that they would feel totally engaged and the part of the community. we are going to change our of this is for the upcoming school year to. those are, in brief, some of the quick observations we saw last year and. >> the bcc will focus on the students. this year, i am going to tell you about the focus for the 2011-2012 obser
