mays and thurman. what was their relationship? >> mays and thurman were friends. mays was thurman's teacher. not that far apart in age. something else there, too. mays takes pleasure in saying i was thurman's teacher, which he was. they formed a relationship. mays enjoys hanging out with thurman than the rest of the morehouse faculty. he says that he's so impressed with young thurman and he was also their debate coach. both for thurman and james norbert. he was the debate coach. they were on the debate team. mays is the coach. they win a tournament and this is legendary that mays nearly jumped off the stage because of his team with thurman. this is really a crucial point. going back to your point about king is that they were able because they debated, they were able to entertain ideas. we live in a society where entertaining ideas is not considered valuable anymore. that people considered other people's perspective. now in order to have a perspective, i mean in order to -- you have to hear one another. that was something that mays and thurman preached a lot. this

this was not thurman's approach. thurman was very much one who said to us, when you affirm your particularity and you are looking for the universal, it doesn't have to be contradictory to declare who you are as you are also embracing others. and appreciating and respecting their gift and the way they can be transforming in your life and world. in closing, thurman's understanding of this transformative dimension comes to him from his own religious experiences. as a mystic, it's thurman's experience that as he encounters god with a sense of oneness, what he also comes to experience is an affirmation of who he is in a particular way and also an affirmation of all there is. all there is. and it's this oneness, this lessening of the boundaries we have often established in order to relate with one another that thurman comes to see as god's dream for us. this is reality. we can live our lives denying it. we can live our lives seeking to work toward isolation, but anything given to separation and isolation fails god's dream
