joining me now, tim mill milller, tia mitchell, and matt dowd.er, tia mitchell, and matt dowd. good to see you all. and i'll start with you, matt, the official position of the rnc is that legitimate political discourse is what happened on january 6th. it is there in black and white. talk me through the danger of that specific declaration. >> well, these are one of those moments where wholly on its own is incredibly damaging though there has been so many things to the republican party over the last five years. but this is one of those times where just the words that they use i think are going to completely brand them in a way that is so far out of the mainstream in the course of this. and what i think it reflects, it is not a reflection of their kowtowing to donald trump, it is the reflection of their kowtowing to their base because this is their base. this is what their base -- the base of the republican party believes. and if you were giving in this moment this is how bad i actually think this is and how lasting this could be in the course of this election year, is if you were

tia mitchell, we'll look like ourselves, a return to jim crow.e that divides the parties. republicans say what we're doing at the state level is not what democrats say of it. she's saying that she views this as a return to essentially legalized segregation. where states pass laws that punish people of color. >> yeah, and you know, she's not the first person to use that terminology. we heard jim crow 2.0 when democrats were criticizing states like georgia for passing new restrictive election laws. and you know that conservatives like to quibble with that phrase jim crow because it does evoke a very dark time in american history. but the truth is, you know, eventually the history books will call this era something. it may not call it jim crow 2.0. but if our democracy continues to allow laws to be put in place that undermine our election system, that undermine equal justice for all, the way our country was supposed to be built upon, then it will lead into an era that may be a dark time that is again marked in our history books. >> and the giant cha

with me now to share their reporting and insights is melanie zenona, seung min kim and tia mitchell.there would be, you know, some soul searching, hand wringing, whatever you want to call it ahead of a midterm in which the party in power is expected to lose. what's going on here is that what the trump years masked for four or five years, these fissures in the democratic party are cracking open now. there's a lot of conversation about what big picture, what direction is the party going? >> and i think the democratic party wants to be a big tent, but there is disagreement about how far the party can go without losing people in the middle and without losing, you know, white liberals. so when you think about things like policing reform, you think about things like being anti-racist or addressing america's legacy of racism, there is a lot of opinion as to what's acceptable and what's quote, unquote too far, too woke. and that's what they are grappling with. i think democrats would probably say that's better than what the republican party is grappling with and what the fissures are on that
