people call them the umbrella man of tiananmen square because it was such a bizarre strategy to use menwith umbrellas to stop people from talking about tiananmen. so when i started thinking about writing this book i knew that it was an incredibly sensitive topic and i knew that it would be difficult to write a book like this. so i took all kinds of precautions in order to try to make sure that i had done my research that i needed to do, that i could do the things that i needed to. i set myself all kinds of rules, so i decided never to talk about my book at home and i never talked about it in the office either because i lived in work and a diplomatic compound which was widely believed to be bugged. i also never talked about on the telephone and i never send an e-mail referring to it either. so when i went to interview people i wouldn't even tell them what i was doing. i would say i'm a journalist, a foreign journalist, i meet you? it was only when we were face to face that i would explain what i was doing. i had a brand-new computer that had never been on line and i typed into this compu
