chinese officials say the death toll from the tianjin explosions is 112. there are fears that toxic chemicals are leaking into the area of wednesday's huge explosions. adriane brown joins us from tianjin. we understand a wider evacuation order has been issued. how worried are the authorities about a broader toxic chemical leak? >> well, darren, i'm about 1.8 kilometers away from the core of the explosions and traffic here is moving freely. so i think there is a bit of a confusion about just how strictly this exclusion zone is enforced. people mingling around here. it's not safe to go any further. the authorities were insitting as a news conference that the air quality is safe based on extensive monitoring that has taken place. they have confirmed that part of the stockic pool hanging over the industrial zone contains particles of cyanide. up to 700 tons of sodium cyanide was store in warehouses that were destroyed in those explosions. today, the government officials were unable to say exactly how many tons of chemicals were there. we do know that the owner

how big is the toyota operation in tianjin?as three really big production operations. this is the biggest of those three. last year, the company for the first time sold over a million vehicles in china. and this operation had 440,000 vehicles produced. so a substantial portion of toyotas business in china comes from this production hub. at this point,d, the company has said at least three days the production will be down. they did not lose any production last week week as the company was on holiday. the expectation from the company is that the losses will be contained to those three days. as you can see from these pictures, the amount of damage was incredibly significant. and it remains to be seen whether the company will have trouble getting parts supply through the ports. as long as the port is down, whether there is any impact supply -- impact to the suppliers and may prevent toyota assembly operations from going down. there are still some questions to be answered in terms of whether or not they company can resume production

the explosions occurred at the warehouse complex near tianjin port. city government officials say the complex was storing about 2,500 tons of toxic chemicals. among the roughly 40 substances kept there were sodium cyanide and ammonium nitrate, which is used in making bombs. the blasts were so severe that they damaged buildings several kilometers away. authorities have cordoned off the area. here we were within two kilometers of the site. unauthorized entry is strictly prohibited. trucks could be seen carrying damaged containers out of the restricted area, one after another. we spent about 15 minutes filming around the area. as we drove away, firefighters sprayed our car with water. the same thing happened to every car in this area, probably to prevent contamination by toxic substances from spreading. residential buildings also suffered damage in the explosion. people are returning from the places where they took shelter to pick up their belongings. some of them have found new accommodations because they don't want to continue living here. >> translato

it is restarting its qiagen factory -- tianjin factory. expect sales to be significant way affected, but there is bound to be some kind of cost. what is the impact right now on the bottom line? guest: the explosion in tianjin really destroy a lot of vehicles for toyota, about 5000 units. most of that will be entrance covered. -- covered by insurance. there will be some impact, but usually in the summer automakers like toyota shut down their plans for maintenance, so the impact may be minimal. on the other hand, it is unfortunate what happened in could bebut it beneficial for toyota, because the cars that were destroyed will cut a lot of inventory off for them. as you know, the industry has an inventory glut. angie: a silver lining. what about other automakers? guest: numbers are sketchy, but there is probably another 15,000-18,000 vehicles that were destroyed on top of what happened with toyota. again, those will also be covered by insurance. impact to toyota, the the industry is very minimal, 1.5 you compare it to the million units sold o

it is tianjin. home to 10 million people and right now the toxic plume seems to be covering not just the immediate area but for miles and miles spreading out from the city. some people were feeling the noxious fumes in their throat. i did speak to will about an hour ago and he has the latest from the scene. we are standing two kilometers from the blast site itself. you can see the effects of the shock wave on this car. first of all, it clearly caught on fire. it's been torn apart. if you look at this convention center just beyond the car, you can see what was a door, an entryway there completely pushed in. a lot of the windows around here are smashed. we visited a housing block earlier and almost every window of every apartment -- it is too far behind me so we can't zoom in but many of those windows are gone. there are shards of glass on the ground. a lot of people so terrified running from their homes overnight when they heard the explosions they didn't have time to put on shoes or clothes. a lot o
