and with me now is debra tice. she is austin's mother. welcome.e appreciate you joining us. >> thank you so much for asking me to come. >> woodruff: so as we've reported today the islamic state claiming that the american aide worker the woman is dead as a result of an air strike. like these other reports, this has to be so hard for you and your family. >> when we think about her family, it's almost more than we can bear. it's just almost unbearable. >> woodruff: and you've gotten to know them? >> well, we don't know them as well as some of the other families, but we have had contact with them. of course, we share this burden. >> woodruff: austin has been missing now for two and a half years. what keeps you and your family going? what are you hearing from the government? what are you hearing from any sources you have that he's there and he can -- >> well we do get periodic words of encouragement, you know, that we need to be patient, that he's alive, he's relatively well taken care of, and, so, we have this steadfast hope that he is coming home. we

tice campaign. they offer to post pictures of themselves blindfolded. >> what does this mean? >> when journalists are captured we are all blindfolded. we want him to engage diplomatically in dialogue with the syrian government because our government has said they will do all they can to find austin and bring him safely home. the syrian government has told us the same thing. so what do we need? we need the line of communication between the two of them. >> reporter: the obama administration says it is doing what it can. >> without going into details we certainly have means of raising concerns about his case and we have done that in the past. >> reporter: why should the u.s. deposit be responsible for somebody who knowingly puts themselves at risk? >> it is an established function of government to protect its citizens. regardless of circumstances. >> as the tices wait for word of their son they hear of others, all held by i.s.i.l. >> think about the kids, you know the suffering that they endured for su

we saw deborah and mark tice there at that press conference and mrs. tice saying that u.s. hostage policy needs to improve significantly. what do you think might be the number one change? >> reporters without borders, we of course support strongly mr. tice's parents. there are many requests. we urge the u.s. administration to create a single point of accountability really dedicated to the safe and soonest return of the hostage. this focal point doesn't exist right now and it would really represent an improvement of the communication between all the government agencies involved in hostage crisis. another request is an improvement in the external communication, the communication with the family and we and the families are really pushing for maybe the consideration of authorizing security clearance sometimes with the families. >> what does that mean before you go on? >> just to order families to have access to classified information they don't have access to right now. the administration is not sharing any information with the families, and i can tell you that it's a huge frus

joining me now are austin tice's parents, debra and marc. we want to thank you for taking the time to be here. i guess the first question i would ask is who, if anyone in the obama administration is in touch with you, and what have they been able to tell you so far about who they think might be holding your son? >> well we've been in touch with the state department since very early on. in the earliest days of when we realized austin was missing. and the government will tell us very little. we know that we would like for them to tell us more. so we've been in contact, and certainly we were in contact with the fbi for the first couple of years. we were in contact with them very regularly. so it hasn't been a lack of contact. it's really been a lack of communication. >> and what are you calling for specifically in your petition to the president? >> well what we've come to understand, joy, in the course of this 2 1/2 years is that governments, and that's who we're dealing with the u.s. government and the syrian government respond to encouragemen

that is austin tice a freelance journalist who went missing in syria of august 2012. is still at least one american hostage in the region after the death of kayla mueller. this grainy video that surfaced in september of 2012 purports to show tice blind folded with his hands tied behind his back walking with masked men in deserted countryside. they believe he was in syrian government custody. austin tice's parents are taking the rare step of launching a public awareness campaign to help free their son and to change u.s. policy around hostage situations. joining me now are austin's parents mark and deborah tice. thank you so much for joining me. i know these have been difficult days for the nation but especially for families who are waiting to find out the status of their loved ones. a lot of people are confused as to who might be holding austin. we have only really heard about isis and the hostages isis has had. can you tell us a little bit about who you guys may -- what the theories are out there in terms of who may have austin in captivity? >> from the very beginning
