balkman's former chief of staff said today she's not qualified to be president and endorsed tim pawlenty instead. how much stock can you put a former employee saying something like that? did they end badly? >> he's a pawlenty guy. you can always come out and say as sarah palin did of those former mccain aides, well, they just didn't like me and that's why they're saying these things about me. but he's not just saying that tim pawlenty is more qualified on the issues or i agree with him on the issues. he was quite specific about it. he called her campaign offices wildly out of control and said that she was without any leadership experience or real results from her years in office. experience is really an important issue this year for republicans. because they claim that barack obama's problem was that he had no experience. and so they say they need to run somebody who can show that they have the experience to lead that barack obama did not have. so this is a pretty strong criticism. >> erick, do you think she could be the republican nominee? >> you know, if i had to call the race today, anderson, prob

how to go after him. we saw that with tim pawlenty at the debate and even seen it with michelle bachmann who i thought -- saw interviewed and asked whether she thought was what mitt romney did in massachusetts was a bad idea with health care she wouldn't say it. >> two problems. generally, it is early to go after the frontrunner if you are a relatively newish candidate. this is a time when party activists are beginning to pay attention. most voters are paying very little attention. and to the extent they are, the candidates want to make a good first impression. and you don't make a good first impression if the first thing out of your mouth is to attack somebody else. so that's part of the problem. specifically with tim pawlenty, i think he had a problem this week. because he had foreshadowed an attack at the debate over health care, using the term -- sunday morning show on fox of obamneycare which suggested he would use the debate to make a fight over that issue when given the opportunity and given several opportunities to do it, he backed away. and they now believe and recognize that was a mistake. and

tim pawlenty had a particularly bad week. michele bachmann doesn't seem as if she can get the nomination. you can see how she can get very, very strong, and in the end, the mitt romney folks love the idea of it being michele bachma bachmann. but the idea of the player to be named later, specifically rick perry. i think when you look at how this week played out, as good of a week as mitt romney had as being a front-runner, you're seeing it in our own poll, you're seeing it in other polls. rick perry had a pretty good week, too, because of two things -- one, the tim pawlenty flubs, and two, the fact that there does seem to be this vacuum here of the antiestablishment wing of the party who's not enthused about who they want. >> and tim pawlenty baggage in a bit, but paul gigot, let me ask you this. the buzz about rick perry. he spoke this weekend at a gathering of republicans down in new orleans. here's a portion of what he said. >> let's speak with pride about our morals and our values and redouble our effort to elect more conservative republicans. let's stop this american downward spiral! >> here's a repu
