abc 7 news reporter tim johns continues our team covers tonight. he talked with pg&e about how the utility is responding to these outages, and what are they saying this evening? tim: those power problems are persistent throughout the bay the spokesperson i spoke to said just under 70,000 folks are currently without power, primarily in the north bay as well as here in the peninsula. now, pg&e has brought out 500 additional staff members to try and get things up and running as soon as it is safe for them to do so. that, of course, being the keyword -- safety. they will not send folks out until it is safe for them to expect those lines and get the power back on. power is only one issue that is being caused by this storm. another one is of course just the damage and the debris the storm is causing. we have been around neighborhoods all around san francisco and i have some video i want to pull up and show you guys just to give viewers at home an idea of what we are looking at. we were in the forest hills neighborhood where there w aleia lot of concern. f

abc 7 news reporter tim johns heard from law enforcement officials, whose continued message is that more needs to be done to stop the violence. tim: and other day, another sad story out of oakland. >> how many times do we have to cry out for help? how many times do we have to say to you that we are in the moment of crisis? tim: of 15-year-old girl was shot and killed in the passenger seat of a car following a road rage incident near bankrupt avenue and 50th avenue. speaking at a news conference thursday afternoon, and emotional chief armstrong said, while his heart breaks over the tragic incident, the police alone cannot stop the violence. he is calling for a multipronged approach, with the community playing a key role. >> if you haven't spoken out, you should feel saddened by that. if you haven't exercised your voice, you should feel saddened for that. tim: this is the 109th homicide so far this year and comes on the heels of another homicide last week which saw the ■killing of a beloved oakland educator. the president of the oakland police officers association says, opd just doesn't ha

abc7 news reporter tim johns talked with one man who lost his daughter to gun violence about what he's doing to try to make a difference. tim: our city is hurting right now. so we're just doing what we can to try to bring oakland together and say stop the violence. tim: 24 years ago to the day, donald laciy's daughter, louise shay, was shot and killed while walking home from school. all these years later, lacy worries that oakland is still facing a wave of senseless violence. one that is seen 113 homicides so far this year and counting. >> that's not acceptable. we have to value life more. >> ♪ isn't she lovely isn't isni wonderful. >> in the wake of his daughter's death lace yes founded the love life organization a group inspired by the vision to bring awareness within the community to help end the violence and -- inflicted upon so many families. >> there's so much good in our city. let's start bringing a spotlight on the good and changing people's minds and hearts. so we can put an end to this senseless violence. reporter: a message that resonates with the oakland police department.

reporter tim johns has the concerns. tim: pfizer booster shots are currently available for anyone 65 and older as well as those with underlying conditions, but officials in santa clara county say there booster rollout is off to a slow start. >> we haven't seen as many as we thought would respond. i think we have seen, on our dashboard, about 71,000 people for a booster shot so far. tim: those 70,000 represent 5% of the 1.5 million people who got their original shots in the county, and although that statistic is slightly skewed due to only pfizer recipients being eligible so far, santa clara officials what the numbers to increase. >> i think perhaps people are still wondering whether they should, there may be some confusion. tim: to address that confusion the county is trying to get more booster information out to the public conveying the message that although the original vaccine series is highly effective data shows its effectiveness does seem to wane over time. >> just like we get flu shots every year and sometimes you

tim johns was at oakland international, with the response from the airline. >> chaos and confusion at airports across the country this weekend, with southwest airlines canceling over 1800 flights over the past few days. some of those affected, also here in the bay area. d be cance ca had to spen southwest says them stems from bad weather and air traffic control issues. they tell abc 7 in a statement, we experienced weather challenges in our florida airports at the beginning of the weekend. challenges that were compounded by unexpected air traffic control in shoes -- issues in the same region, triggering delays and prompting significant cancellations for us, beginning friday evening. the faa has denied any current problems, saying there have been no major air traffic control issues since friday. despite the crazy week and for many southwest passengers, other airlines have not extremist issues to the same extent. on sunday alone, southwest canceled over one quarter of all their scheduled flights. that compares to less than 2% by american airlines. in a separate statement issued sunday,

tim johns includes -- joins our team covers tonight. he is in the marina district. what does it look like out there? >> electricity -- the electricity that you mentioned is just one part of it. this entire street here is just starting to be reopened. it was closed for several hours because of flooding. it was too dangerous to drive down. officials say that is because the sewage and the drainage pipes could not keep up with the amount of water they were receiving and the tops were coming off and flooding the entire street. authorities have been sorting this out and the street is about to reopen in just a few minutes time. beyond the flooding, another issue is the debris. there is a video to take a look at. that is all over the city. firefighters say they have been responded to hundreds of calls. this shot is from the forest hills neighborhood of san francisco where five homes had to be evacuated as a result of a linning tree. those people were let back into residences after authorities deemed it to be safe. this is why they are urging everyone to ride out the storm a
