tim kaine is watching this closely.r of higher education at the university of georgia, as well as associate editor of the review of higher education. tim kaine, nice to have you on the newshour. could u lay out the stakes here? who is striking and what are they demanding? >> sure. it is nice to be here. there are four groups of workers at the university of california who are on strike currently. two groups have reached tentative agreements that are being voted on now. four the groups are graduate student researchers, graduate student teachers, postdoctoral students, and workers. they do not include tenured faculty members. it is over salaries, which the unions argue are woefully low considering the cost of living in california and the cost of housing near campus. the majority of graduate students are paying more than a third of their salary on housing per month. many pay more than half. beyond salaries, the unions are negotiating for a significant increase in child care benefits and parental leave for longer appointment

joining me now is the virginia center tim kaine, a democrat. thank you to the show, senator. >> thank you, reverend, great to be with you. >> senator tim kaine, first i want to start with the breaking news coming out of the hill. you just heard our exclusive nbc reporting that the january six committee met today to finalize plans to issue criminal referrals for president, former president, donald trump ahead of the monday meeting. what is your reaction first of all? >> well, reverend sharpton, i agree with your reporter. while they are advancing referrals on three items, the most significant is the third, assisting in an insurrection against the united states. that clause of the 14th amendment, the constitution, has only been triggered once or twice since 1870. if it is triggered, it would bar any insurrection to those who give comfort or assistance to insurrectionists from ever again serving in any elected office in the united states unless that disability is lifted by congress. this is a real, i mean, it's a major, major development. nearly u
