joining me now is tim o'brien, senior executive editor of bloomberg opinion and democratic pollster fernand amandi. tim, if i missed something great that the trumps have contributed to america, you are a biographer of donald trump, please, please, fill us in. >> well, i actually want to point out that also, he had two wives who were immigrants. in that list of immigrant connections in the world of donald trump. you know, if anyone had told him that his -- two of his wives were infecting the country or were vermin or were garbage cans, he obviously would have been insulted. and he would have taken action, strong action against those people, but he has no trouble getting up on a national stage as a republican candidate in a party that at one point said it wanted to embrace tolerance and expand the republican net to include more people of color and more immigrants in the party, to completely redefine it in the most ugly, sensationalistic and damaging of terms. and he's a man who also made his bones professionally and politically in the city of new york, which is not a perfect city, it's got it

and bloomberg executive editor, tim o'brien. mike, how is the harris campaign hoping to drive things forward today on the heels of that speech last night? >> well, ana, it may not be 70,000 people and on the national mall, but you can probably hear how loud the energy is here just outside raleigh, just after 10:00 a.m., hours before the vice president is scheduled to speak here, probably already a few thousand people on hand. and what we expect to hear from the vice president is to take that message that she delivered in front of the white house last night here on the road as part of that closing pitch to voters. what we heard from the vice president last night was probably as comprehensive a case as she could make for her candidacy to the american people since we heard her at the democratic national convention. he was biographical, talking about the lessons she learned watching her mother paying bills at the kitchen table growing up, her life as a prosecutor, where she said it's always been her instinct to protect her fellow am

[ cheers and applause ] ♪ ♪ ♪ and they want it that way. tonight the calls are growing louder for the resignation of san jose city councilman omar torres, who is accused of sexual misconduct with a minor. the city council made a significant move stripping torres of all of his committee assignments. but what happens next? mayor matt mahan has some ideas in this political and legal power struggle. nbc's jocelyn moran is with us tonight. jocelyn, could we see a recall here? well, mayor matt mahan is certainly putting that option out there. mehan and city council want torres to step down. he has not done so. torres missed his second consecutive city council meeting today. mehan says they can't remove him from office right now, but they are taking away his responsibilities. i believe councilor torres is holding his seat hostage and denying representation to the 100,000 residents of district three. at today's san jose city council meeting, it was clear man

political director of california's republican party and the cofounder of the lincoln project and tim o'brien joins us, bloomberg executive senior editor and you know him as donald trump biographer. what do you make of what we heard on the campaign trail and over the last 24 hours? >> you know, it's a good thing it's only one week to go. as trump escalates and escalates, i'm not sure how much of this escalation we can collectively take. i went to the rally in madison square garden. i will tell you, five hours of sitting through an awful lot of hate speech, it's pretty overwhelming what is being sold to republicans right now. i know not all republicans agree with all the sentiments that were expressed by trump and those he chose to feature. it is painful to see what is motivating his core electorate right now. the applause lines that got the most vigorous response were the most hateful ones, to be honest. the belittling, nicknames. they were the racist statements. they were in particular anything having to do with this idea that somehow the united states is a country under attack by hordes of
