[ ♪ theme music ♪ ] >> gavin: we're back with media visionary tim o'reilly i asked him how we'll deal with privacy in 2013. >> you know, there are a couple of notions of privacy and one gets confused with secrecy. i.e. i really want to have something that nobody else knows. the other is--and it's not knowable. it's protected. the other notion is that there are social norms about what you dig into. you know there is probably a lot i could probably find out about your personal life or my personal life, and you don't. we don't worry about that. we simply say this is private an we don't have to make it secret in order for it to be private. private is a social construct not a technical construct. secret is a technical construct. you have to do something to make something secret. but private is something that we agree on between ourselves and i think we need to under you know that distinction. if we do, oh, yeah, it's going to be very hard to keep information secret because there are so many case where is the information needs to be shared with a lot of people in
