joining us now chief tim riley from the virginia beach fire and rescue.you help us out on what is the situation in terms of any possible casualties there? >> hello. >> chief riley, this is andrea mitch. we're on the air. thank you so much for calling in. we know you're busy. we just wanted to see what you can tell us about any possible casualties from this crash. >> yes, we're confirming we've had an f-18 delta military aircraft go down into an apartment complex in virginia beach. we do -- we have a third alarm assignment from the fire department here. we had four to five buildings on fire. daniel in this apartment complex. both pilots safely ejected, were transported to a local hospital. with nonlife-threatening injuries. we did have the fire under control right now. and we've had no report of injuries on the ground but we are suspecting you know, the potential could be there because the damage is significant. >> chief riley, let me just repeat that. as far as you know, the two pilots were taken with nonlife-threatening injuries to the hospital. you do n

i want to get to the battalion chief who is on the line, tim riley. sir, do you know how many people were in the buildings or if there are any remain in the building? >> no, they had extensive damage here. three buildings. we're hearing that a thorough details, survey of each structure. two buildings had partial and right now, we do have some of the health risks for the rescuers because military aircraft. right now we're in the deployment to cover it. it's a windy day. >> shep: once you've been able to get into the buildings and determine to determine if there was anyone in there. we'll get back to you. for now, i want to get to a with it. she was driving when she saw the plane flying low over her. then saw the ejection and the plane and the pilot eject out. good afternoon. tell us what it was you saw. >> what i did see was the plane flying extremely low, veered to the left over the top and then i saw stuff coming off the top of the plane right over the building which is a corner market. i went to the right of the corner market and catapult top thing

the battalion chief tim riley just recently gave an interview and told us about what is on scene thereily damaged buildings. three of which are completely destroyed. the f-18 pilots were able to eject safely. they're worried now about structural collapse of some of the other injured buildings. again, three are completely destroyed. but as it comes down to whether or not people were able to get out of those buildings, the fire battalion chief has said they are unaware of anyone injured on the inside. it doesn't mean that they aren't still seeking people that could have been injured within all of this. however, there are no reports from family member to say that loved ones are missing. they are working with the management staff at the apartment complex to get phone numbers and to make sure that everyone is accounted for. that will do it for me today on this edition of "news nation." stay tuned to msnbc. there will be a press briefing shortly before 5:00 p.m. about that news out of virginia beach. and martin bashir comes your way next. ♪ [ acoustic guitar: slow ] [ sighs ] [ announcer ] a
