host: i want to bring in congressman tim roemer. you mentioned the congressman from new york who worked out this bipartisan agreement. he is a republican. the looming question is whether or not kevin mccarthy will go along with this plan. what are you hearing from your gop colleagues? caller: it is split. obviously, last week was not a good week for the republican conference because the whole cheney thing makes this even worse because they are sort of perching anyone who shows any independence -- sort of perching anyone who shows any independence and that is not good for the party. i think republicans make a mistake when they start pushing people out. however, as a former hard-core conservative congressman, it is in leader mccarthy's best interest to do this. it really is. go ahead, independently look at this, document it, go forward with the changes, and then you don't have to be on the defensive all the time. part of the problem with the leadership is if they are always on the defensive, they cannot get anything done. last week, r

joining me now is ambassador tim roemer, a former democratic member of congress and a former member of the 9/11 commissioner. ambassador, i'm so grateful to have you here. thank you for joining. first, i've got to get your reaction to the republican minority leaders in the house and the senate both advocating against the commission to investigate the capitol insurrection. are they put, as my last guests said, party over country? >> well, don, first of all, thank you for having me. nice to be on your show. i think that, don, what this is all about it is not about right or left, but it is about right or wrong. it is not about democrats or republicans, it's about our capitol, our sacred capitol and our constitution. it is not about talking points. it is about seeking the truth. and the house of representatives, i thought that we had a very strong showing of truth today, and 252-175 votes. that's not even close. 35 republicans split with a whip organization in the house to try to get them to go to other way. they voted in a bipartisan bill between bennie thompson from mississippi, a democr

and then tim roemer had the amendment to the intelligence bill with the help of the families and that's how we got a bill passed to the president's desk. but it took time. this has been really on an accelerated pace even though, why don't we have it? well, it's in the works and it takes time to negotiate, in the meantime, though in 2011 -- i mean, excuse me, 2001 and 2002 leading up to that, we had a joint committee in the house and senate, bipartisan committee which i was a co-chair as the top democrat on the intelligence committee. bob graham was the chairman of the intelligence committee in the senate. he and shelby pelosi in the house. and the months were very available to the 9/11 commission and to the legislation establishing it, said it should take advantage of all of those things, as we would hope that this commission would take advantage of some of the other oversight committee's work. so, let's just hope that we can have the clarity of a bipartisan commission, with high-level, national leaders on it. as the committee calls for, with expertise in the areas that are important, w
