paul ryan, tim pawlenty. any idea who might have a permanent seat on that romney campaign bus as the number two? >> it's a good question. we've been trying to get that answer, but without some success, of course. recently there's been a lot of conversation that the vice presidential choice may come sooner than later as the campaign -- the romney campaign recognizes the need for a surrogate to help them fund raise in the new climate that exists in politics these days. a short time from now, as you noted, the representative, paul ryan will be here. the senator from the state, ron johnson, the rnc chair as well as scott walker, the popular governor of the state among republicans. but over the last several days, we have had a chance to see many of these vice presidential candidates moving through this sort of merry go round, as it were. kelly ayotte, the senator from new hampshire was there at the start of what they're calling the every town counts bus tour. following that, we had visits with tim pawlenty, the fo

paul ryan and tim pawlenty were there last week. >> interesting. you guys put daniels in there.sically are eliminating him this morning. is that rough on our part? >> i think at this point, mcdonell -- mcdonell's stock has fallen the most. he was up in the top spot early on in the process. but the problems he's had with his own state republican party pushing him so far to the right has been -- has limited his options. >> there's been a lot of -- it seems as if the romney campaign allowed word to leak, hey, they could go early. they could pick early. they're trying to make a case. it seems this could be one half feeding the media beast. what are the upsides of going early? >> it's about fund-raising. it's such a starkly different landscape than we were in four years ago these candidates are spending more time raising money, vastly more time raising money. >> essentially you need more principle. >> as someone put it last week, this doubles the number of principals you have to scoop up money. at a time when money is the driving factor in the battleground states and in the ad dawrs,

tim pawlenty, john thune. paul ryan was there.the short list was not there and that was marco rubio. he says he has been on the road for many months and he does not like to spend more than 15 days away from his kids. there is speculation that he is being vetted. >> there does seem to be a rehearsal process with many of these candidates. potential running mates campaigning with mitt romney, including tim pawlenty, the former governor of minnesota and paul ryan, who was with him in wisconsin. >> we never really know who they are looking at. they want to keep the list long so that the speculation is out there for a while. they do not want to narrow it down to one person. they want to surprise people. his campaign manager and top aide are the only ones who know what is going on right now. >> is this unusual for a presumptive nominee to hold this kind of meeting with donors and fundraisers? >> it is not unusual to have something like this. it has been done in presidential campaigns before. the only thing that is different is how big th

tim pawlenty will be with him. sunday, rob portman will be with him in ohio, the ohio senator. monday, paul ryan will be with him. all these people have something in common. they were all mentioned as vps. lot of chatter. do you expect mitt romney to make an earlier than expected decision? by that i mean sometime right before the convention on this? how far along is the process? >> there haven't been any decisions made about making a decision. that's about as apt a summary as i can tell you. >> that's incredibly insightful. >> i think this is going to be a very detailed process. i think that's reflected in the governor's appointment of beth myers as part of his search committee. i think it will be a lot of information, going to be a lot of discussion, going to be a great deal of vetting and i think it will ultimately come down to a decision the governor makes. when he makes it, beth will learn, i will learn and so will the american people.

possible running mates are also speaking including former florida governor jeb bush, tim pawlenty, congressman paul ryanlet's go live to park city, utah, and garrett hague. these events are closed to the media. what do we know about the agenda? >> reporter: yeah, chris, the whole point of this thing is to find a way to keep the donors happy and engaged. you have got a mix of social and policy and professional events over the next two days. tonight the sort of main event is this big dinner park city where governor romney and his wife will welcome everybody into town, but also you will see some of these policy round tables today. you're dealing with a lot of people, you have business owners, execs, private he can y i equity folks and they talk about everything from israel to bank policy and health care overall. it's a total engagement strategy. >> they have already given a big chunk of money and i'm sure they'd love for them to bundle more but it's about making them feel like insiders, like want to feel like they have a stake in this, right? >> reporter: exactly. you have the entire top campaign leadershi

some other veep potentials in utah, jeb bush, tim paw lenny, paul ryan, robby jindal.to be there. have we gotten any more insights from beth myers who is heading up the vetting? >> you know, it's funny, thomas, there's really no tougher nut to crack in the romney campaign than beth myers and that's why she got this job. she does not talk to the media. and ironically enough the only person who anyone in the romney campaign has officially confirmed is being vetted for vp is marco rubio and he's really one of the only people on sort of the conventional wisdom short list who won't be here. he and chris christiee being the two exceptions to the rule, but romney's comments publicly have always been he wants somebody ready to go, could be president on day one, and he said he sort of prefers the ideas of governors because those folks have experience and know how to run things. of the folks here today, you have to think tim pawlenty and potentially jeb bush are on that list. >> doesn't it make sense if marco rubio is somebody high up on this list, doesn't it make sense for him
