. >> tim caputo has some new information. tim, what have you learned? >> we can tell you from nbc news and the sheriff's department in san bernardino county that one suspect is in custody. two other suspects have been shot. we don't know the status of those two people that were shot. obviously the neighborhood in which the shoot-out ended the helicopter that's taken the shots and traffic back-up there. nbc news reporting that of the in custody and the two others have been s.w.a.t. as they close in on the suv, we can only sewel that at least one of the suspects still inside that suv, and as the officers get closer, they're using those s.w.a.t. vehicles for cover to make sure they can get closer without getting in harm's way. what we know at this point after the press conference a short time ago where they said the number dead from the shooting earlier this morning has been up to 17. three suspects have been located. one currently in custody. two have been shot. we don't know if they will survive those injuries, but police obviously of moving very slowly

's tim caputo has the latest. >> tim: a prison put on lockdown after corrections officers heard a gunshot in the woods nearby. state police were called to mci shirley, a medium-security prison to, help search for man seen running away not long after a single shot was fired. no one was hurt and state police are still trying to determine if it was a hunter in the woods. those who live near the prison say around 3:30 they new something was up. what's it been like since? a lot of helicopters. >> tim: state police used infrared cameras on their helicopter to search the woods but came up with nothing. they searched with dogs, too, and shut down both entrances to the prison. christmas eve visiting hours were canceled because of the prison lockdown. anna drove an hour hoping to wish her brother merry christmas. >> i just wanted to see him before the holiday, but i guess we can't now. >> tim: they're no longer searching, but state police officers who normally patrol this area will keep an eye out for the man seen running away. neighbors say they worried about a possible gunman lurking in the woods
