marty is in the outback meteorologist tim williams is inside here with us. the first warning weather center. good afternoon tim. a little more dry in here. >> cloudy and we are in a break between showers and maybe storms. i want to show you first warning live doppler radar, nothing around the area except for heavy clouds. what could be be coming our way? we could see more rain headed our way. a big batch to the south and west that is moving in this general direction put it in motion and you can see pretty much the direction it is moving. it's just the general eastern flow heading our way. we could see showers through the afternoon. already, though, at bwi marshal, we have seen around a quarter of an inch of rain. .23 is at the bottom of the screen. average for the entire year is over 12 1/2 inches. year to date we have seen just around 8 1/2 inches. we expect to see more rain and the drought watch tracks the rainfall totals and we will monitor them moving on through the afternoon. rain showers come with a toll on the temperatures. for a little more on that we

meteorologist tim williams with the updated numbers from first warning weather. >>> the one change we can be focused on at this time is that we don't have snow, ice or freezing winds in time for opening day. and that's different than anyone that we can think of in recent memory. we've had pretty cold ones. although last year, i think we got up to 75 degrees. 58 now, our temperature at bwi marshall. 50 in ocean city. 50 in oakland. we have cold winds coming in. courtesy of a high-pressure system in canada that is starting to push in very dry, but seasonably cold winds. north winds are going to persist. from 3:00 a.m. to 9:00 tomorrow mong -- morning, across the northern tier of the state. there is a freeze warning in effect. sun comes up nicely. we'll lose that freeze warning. but tender plants. any early vegetation you have outside could definitely suffer as a result of those cold temperatures. for tomorrow, mostly sunny and breezy. if you're going down to the ballpark. first pitch, of course, is at 3:05. our coverage begins at 2:00. but 60 degrees in time for the game. it's going to

first warning meteorologist tim williams is here with first warning weather. tim, i kind of leaned into liking monday more than today. >> well, mary, we need the rain. you know what the saying says. we're having a little rain moving into the region. actually, it's been taking all day for just a little rain to move across. temperatures are beginning to cool down. drastic cooldown. 52 degrees as of just a second ago. now, the numbers are coming in from the rest of the state. but we want to open this up. we still have more rain moving into the region. we'll probably get the batch that is over west virginia and virginia over the next several hours. then it starts to clear out. probably staying closer to the shore. and we probably won't see much of that. take a look at our temperatures right now. temperatures actually dropping now, 51 degrees at bwi marshall. 58, the warm spot on the shore. and as mary mentioned, just a little well, cooler, not a little, but a lot cooler. we are 25 degrees cooler today than yesterday. yesterday, at this time, very close to about 80

meteorologist tim williams is here with the updated numbers from first warning weather. tim, they had a good day out in the mount washington area to work on this, didn't they? >> yes, they did. they have had good days and the days will continue. the stretch will continue right on into the weekend. temperatures a little cooler today, as a result of the clouds that kai mentioned a little earlier. and the winds from the northwest that have be just pretty persistent for the last few days. 59 degrees now at bwi marshall. 43 in oakland. as a result of those northwest winds, 2:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, through 9:00 a.m., we do have a freeze warning in effect for allegheny and garrett counties, and a frost advisory in effect for all areas pretty much on the western shores, except baltimore city and anne arundel county. but again, it's going to be another chilly night. it's because of the high pressure to our north and northwest. that high is going to eventually ease on down to the shore and move on out to sea. but when it does, it's going to allow for some warm air. and when i sa

meteorologist tim williams and bob turk have more on the desperate need for more rain. bob? >> and wjz drought watch continues to track those rainfall totals. take a look first of all, at our drought index. this is put out by the national weather service. you can still see that most of maryland, at least from the bay east is in the moderate or severe drought. that's based on amount of rainfall and water on the ground. to the west of us, still called abnormally dry. the amount of rain we saw yesterday, really did nothing to help the drought. puit did wet things down. take a look at numbers. and nobody really got more than a quarter of an inch, as you can see. columbia, frederick, bel air and towson. at the airport, officially, only 16/100ths of anich. hopefully we'll get more this weekend. we could see at least that much or more maybe in some areas. it's been a mild afternoon. tim has a look at some of the temperatures and what's on tap for the end of the week. tim? >> temperatures have been comfortable. but the sun, with this light breeze, only serves serves to evaporate thi

. >> first warning weather coverage continues with tim williams in the weather center.explain why this did not trigger a tsunami. >> reporter: the first one we mentioned struck along a segment, a crack on the earth of the sea floor. a second trembler, 8.2 magnitude quake struck around two hours later, roughly 120 miles south of the first quake's epicenter. both quakes occurred at roughly shallow deaths. one at 14 miles, the other 10 miles beneath the sea floor. now, the reason no tsunami was created was the direction of the earth's movement. this is caused by a strike, slip, fall. this means that the plates usually fall side by side, rather than radically police placing the water. so it really didn't change the motion of the ocean, so to speak in this case. but we'll continue to keep you posted on the aftershocks. and back to you now, denise. >> thank you, tim. >>> for years ai church in southeast baltimore county has struggled with minor vandalism. but now, what happened last night has caught the attention of federal authorities. >> reporter: a few months ago, red pain

meteorologist tim williams and bob turk have more. >> let's take a look at this latest drought map. this comes from the national weather service. take a look at the state of maryland. right now, the entire eastern shore. let's go to that drought. can we see that? no. okay. well, i can tell you that the eastern shore in delaware is under what we call a severe drought, west of the bay. it's called abnormally warm, dry conditions. and that's what's going to continue, at least the next several days, because we don't really expect to see much in the way of rain now. tomorrow night, there is a slight chance of a shower or thundershower, particularly across northern sections. right now, temperatures here in the mid-60s. as you can see, the cool spot, 54 in ocean city. 55 over in oakland. but temperatures this afternoon, running yeah, somewhat higher than yesterday. six degrees higher now. 12 degrees warmer in cumberland. and ocean city. there we go. there's your drought map. as you see, from most of the state, either abnormally dry, moderate dry, and eastern shore of delaware, under what w

meteorologist tim williams is here with the updated numbers from first warning weather. so is tomorrow going to look anything like today, tim? >> early on, it just might have a little bit of a resemblance to today. but after the day starts to progress, clouds start to increase. we'll have a better chance of rain in the afternoon. first warning doppler radar tells us, we have clear conditions over 60 degrees right now. we're now at our warmest point of the day. we have rain moving in from the west. and that is going to take a while to get here. and it's going to be a little less than what we initially first thought. so it's going to move in by tomorrow afternoon. it will be pretty much saturday evening to sunday afternoon event. but the temperatures right now, still going to hold up at least for now. but this is what we really want to draw your attention to. there is a freeze warning in effect for carroll county, out to the west, and frost advisories in effect for all of the areas from baltimore county to the east. and the northeast. and down toward howard and montgomery c

meteorologist tim williams is taking a closer look at this earthquake and why it did not trigger a tsunami. tim? >> well, this tremor was a magnitude 8.6. it ranks up there with some of the strongest quake ever. it struck around 2:48 there, local time there in indonesia. it triggered along a segment on a fault on the sea floor, some 269 miles southwest of the coafl coastal city of bandas a -- bandaaceh. both quakes occurred at roughly shallow deaths. one at 14 miles below, and one at 10 miles below the sea floor. according to data gathered by the united states geological survey. we have a graphic to give you the idea of this is the type of earthquake it was. this is considered a strike- slip fault. now, this means that the plates usually slide side by side of each other without radically altering the height of the sea floor. no water was thrown up, no water was displaced, which means no tsunami was triggered as a result of the earthquake. we'll continue to keep you posted on the outcome of these earthquakes, kai. of course, right now, we want to take a look at our local weather. nothing to
