for the times square alliance, the real fireworks start just after midnight. as an army of 180 sanitation workers descend on the aftermath. flanked by 50 street sweepers and garbage trucks. not even six hours later, 52 tons of party hats, confetti and debris have vanished. >> the ball drops at midnight, and then by literally 6:00 in the morning on the first, the department of sanitation from the city of new york has done an amazing job picking up so much of the trash that's out there. and it really looks like there hadn't been a million people in times square the day before. >> reporter: and that's just the trash. >> miles and miles of cables. we're building three stages, extra platforms. and literally within 24 hours, the stages come down and times square is back to normal. the confetti's disappeared! it's all been taken care of. >> reporter: but taken care of doesn't always mean disposed of. tens of thousands of those little slips of confetti actually have handwritten wishes on them, and not everyone's so quick to throw them away. >> my wife and i every year

live here, new york times square. we are on the ground and has been speaking with individuals to get their reaction about what has happened in istanbul, turkey, and what concerns, if any, they have, and how they're talking about. sarah, what are you hearing? >> reporter: well richard, it is extremely loud here. so it's hard to hear much, but honestly, i heard what you were talking about as far as the governor of new york moving through the state in regards to istanbul and how they are keeping an eye on that situation. and they've taken extensive efforts here in time's square to make sure that the two million people estimated to be in this area are feeling safe and secure. and so far, people we've spoke to say that that is the case. they feel safe. they're very happy and excited to be here in times square, but let's talk about the effort that they're taking. these officers are putting in to make sure that people feel that way. we talk about those 65 dump trucks that are filled with 15 tons of sand. lining times square
