i have walked up from 32nd street through times square, and folks are still having a pretty good time. what is fascinating about times square. most of of times square has power except for the western side. we are talking about the juniors cheesecake shop is and the hard rock cafe. they have no power at all. leland: not only do they have no power. but some of these buildings have no power. there are 44,000 customers we are told without power. but that number could go up or down. there are parts of manhattan without power that is not included in what con-ed has told us. 44,000 customers is not 44,000 people. it -- it could be an entire office building or apartment building. the stoplights are on in times square. we don't know if that's new or not there. todd, as you are making your way through, are you seeing any rescues go on? this is 6th avenue, the fastest mode of transportation you get around town is by bike. are you seeing any fire trucks moving around, checking buildings in the residential parts affected by this blackout? reporter: just in the last 10 minutes i have seen a dozen f

columbus circle, down through here would be broadway, into times square itself. it's an area with a lot of stop lights, cross streets, and pedestrians, and cars that aren't used to pedestrians walking cross at any time, there's always a walk or a don't walk. this could be a little problem for a while certainly. we're talking about 85 degrees, so nothing that would be deadly, i think, to most people out there with a window open or too. certainly not comfortable but not the 100-degree or 105 heat index like we might see next week or even a week from now. this will be a hot place to be next week as the heat index will soar. at least for right now, 85 is bearable. we'll see what happens to this, but still lots of power out here and a lot of people walking around, not knowing what to do, not being able to buy anything because all the computers are out as well. and not being able to go to all these shows because, well, that's broadway. >> how concerning is it, chad, when we speak with this new york city council speaker who tells us that there's a hospital right now runn

look at a very dark times square. that almost never happened. some of the video billboard are illuminated on the left of the screen. but most of of times square is dark as a result of this power outage as the result of an underground fire in a manhole that carries the electrical cables on a very hot day. it left 50,000 customer without power. a customer isn't necessarily one human being. a customer could be an entire building. this is a significant event in new york city. it's on the 42nd anniversary of the great plaqueout of 197 -- blackout of 1977. two big stories year covering. the new york city power outage as well as the arrival of tropical storm barry it's coming ashore now as a tropical storm. it's expected to drenchal alabama, mississippi and beyond with an unthinkable amount of rain. that's also a story we are continuing to watch. our jacqui heinrich is with us and has more on what's going on in midtown manhattan. reporter: the fire department is reporting that there are no patients at the scene of the fire. we are getting a better grip
