and in a studio, broadway in manhattan, timothy o'sullivan grew up there. as i read about those sullivan, i realize there really was not a first-rate book about mathew brady which really astonished me given his importance. take all of us who care about history, and know the name of mathew brady and increasingly in the last couple years have become aware of his photographs, 150th anniversary of the civil war, and less than 51 i started out. and after about a year reading about him doing research about the proposal for the book. it should have struck me given the industry of scholars and journalists like myself, bradley, if there wasn't a good book about mathew brady there might be a reason. the truth is that there are two good reasons. one is for a man who was in the public ought for have a century whose name became a brand both for portrait photography and civil war photography who hung around with the journalists of his day and was acquainted with most of the people who mattered in his time, dedicated to making photography a medium for the recording of his
