timothy johnson. >> and joining us is marshall lewis and he is chief of the department of physical medicine at st. luke's. >> thank you. >> dr. johnson talked a little bit about pain. can you define it more? >> i think chronic pain is defined partly by time. when pain lasts more than three months but also the debilitating nature of kron ig pain is very serious as it may not get better so severity is another defend of it. >> what are some of the common causes? >> some of the common causes, in our clinic, motor vehicle accidents, sports injuries. involved in athletics or n college and certainly trauma. overtime may have a fall or accident that causes them to get a fracture. sometimes it doesn't heal completely. >> so when they come to you, they are at their wits end? >> literally. some of them are limping into the clinic. besides being understanding, the most important thing for me to figure out is what happened and what is causing the pain. >> and have they tried a variety of things and bunch of doctors and nothing is working? >> often. many times patients will have gone through local walgre

timothy johnson. >> reporter: adolescents are notorious for not doing what they are told. parents may be falling short when it comes to giving these kids routine medical care. the american academy of pediatrics and american medical association recommend that adolescents get annual preventive medical attention. yet of 300,000 kids stud he'd in minnesota, one-third of them failed to go for even one preventive care visit between the ages of 13 and 17. 40% saw a doctor for preventive care just ce during those four years. nonpreventive doctor visits were more frequent at one per year. this lack of routine annual visits means teens could be falling behind on immunizations and that problems such as substance abuse eating disorders and sexually transmitted diseases may be overlooked. interestingly all the young people studyed had either private or government health insurance. authors include every doctors visit by adolescents should be treated as preventive care visit. a model known as no missed opportunities. i'm dr. timothy johnson. >>> 30 volunteers from johns hopkins wants to

timothy johnson has all the details. >> reporter: early detection is the front line in the fight against breast cancer. but there is disagreement over what method works best for which women. a new study in the journal of clinical oncology compares the effectiveness of mri screening and mammography in women at high risk of breast cancer. more than two thousand women were screened every year with mammography and with an mri for an average of 5 years. 97 primary breast cancers were detected. the researchers found mri was more sensitive in mammography in discovering invasive breast cancer. 42.7% of the breast cancers were found only by mri screening. the improvement was graveest in those women whose high risk came from a genetic mutation called brca1. the authors conclude mri is quote strongly superior to mammography and they recommend that women at high risk for breast cancer get annual mri screenings. with this medical minute, i'm dr. timothy johnson. >> children in this tech savvy age of ipods and 4g probably more about texting and channeling sureing but turning pages of a good book. each
