earlier today there were big delays on the red line after part of a rail cracked near the tinley towntation. trains had to single track between friendship heights and van ness. others turned back to silver spring and farragut north. trains were so crowded the doors had trouble closing. the problem was resolved and things got back to normal around 12:30 this afternoon. >>> a local elementary school is honored today for its dedication to fitness and healthy eating. william ramsey elementary in alexandria received the healthy schools award from the marine corps marathon and maryland charity. the award also came with a $1,000 check. students and teachers were honored for participating in the kids' fun run last october just before the marine corps marathon. the race director says students didn't let the cold, rainy weather keep them away that day. >> i was shocked and proud to see over 1200 children come out and want to run. the smiles on their faces, they didn't care that they were wet. they didn't care there were puddles out there. they really were a show of force and energy. >> reporter

a cracked rail outside the tinley town station caused a major headache yesterday, forcing trains to singlerack between friendship heights and van ness for more than four hours. now unlike some other cracked rails earlier this winter, this was not weather related but rather a crack officials say is just due to the rail's age. even if the commute is different this morning and goes well, weekend track work that has become commonplace will close two stations. talking about woodley park, we're also talking about cleveland park on the red line. plus, there will be single tracking on the blue and orange lines between mcpherson square and the smithsonian. green line trains will share a track between naylor road and branch avenue. also yellow line trains will only be able to travel between huntington and mt. vernon square. all of that work starts tonight at 10:00 p.m. take a look here. it's the weekend closures. yesterday, a surprise cracked rail that metro officials point to as proof that they need to raise fares to bring in more money. the board voted to keep a proposed fare hike on the table. th

no real good option unless they go to tinley, which is very rigorous with a population that just couldceed in regular public schools. every child who graduates from there goes to a four-year college. absolutely every one of them. it is amazing if you saw what happened at that school. it also gives you a unique offering also. we have something called the hope academy, which deals with substance abuse. there's only, like, probably 30 or 50 kids in that school at any one time. graduation is usually 6 to 12 students a year, but these kids did not succeed anywhere else. it is an amazing school. they do such good work there. recently, we opened up an academy which deals with kids with behavioral and cognitive disabilities. very special school. ollie public school in the state of indiana that deals with that. a lot of tears shed that day when we cut the ribbon. that is what charter schools can do for you. in addition, we have the mine trust, headed by a guy named dave harris. he does a great job. used to run the charter school office in the city of indianapolis for my predecessor. we are in t
