're the states that we always expect to be in the fight. but if you start by losing a state that really, for years and years, had been in the republican column, you started behind. gwen: we've seen polls this week in all three of those states. what does it look like? >> "the washington post" had a poll today that showed barack obama with a lead in virginia. it's very early, but still, things that have been happening in virginia are problematic, or at least worrisome for romney and the republicans, because where obama did so well, there's a growing hispanic population there, and the hispanics are going to play crucial roles in other swing states. where he really did so well was in the washington suburbs are virginia, and that's where there's a lot of college-educated people, mobile people, and these increasingly are turning a little more democratic. so they've got -- romney has to worry about that type of he electrictor rat, the raleigh-durham of north carolina and that sort of thing. >

when i came to ohio state university, i was prettyonvinced i was going to become a coal geologist. because, having grown up in west virginia, i could see -- one of the reasons of going to college was to get a job. and i could see the application there. in my first quarter here, i got a little note in my mailbox that said, "how would you like to work for a research program "in the institute of polar studies, looking at ice cores?" and so i took this position. it took me about a year, year and a half, to really start to realize what was archived in those ice cores, or the potential. and at that time, all the work was being done in the polar regions. narrator: during the 1950s and '60s, ambitious drilling programs in the remote ice caps of antarctica and greenland provided an impressive record of past climate, such as ice ages and warming events, going back hundreds of thousands of years. but these records only provided part of the climate's history. as a young man, thompson's interests lay outside the arctic. he set a goal -- to drill ice where no one had ever drilled before. in the

he needs to get ohio, he needs to get florida. auto is king in ohio, it's the number two state, behind michigan. it's about 75,000 jobs in the state that are tied to the auto industry, not just manufacturing, but the parts and supply chain and all of this. governor romney needs to get off of this. he makes that point that the unions got a sweetheart contract out of that deal if and if you would have gone straight into bankruptcy without that deal, with they would have come back. would've, could've, should've. this is not a winning argument for him. he needs to have a broader economic argument. he needs to get away from the all bailout industry, and more to make his case, higher taxes, more regulation are putting the economy in a straight jacket and keeping the recover from blossoming. if he's debating the auto bailout from now to november, it's an even proposition. if he thinks or he's trying to convince himself he's right on the facts, he's not going to win that one. >> union workers make up about 12% of all workers. they're shrin

you and i are going to spend a lot of time in ohio and florida. two things to keep an eye out for. one is the state by state unemployment numbers. you see president obama in the lead in ohio. that's because unemployment is going down in ohio. the other issue of course, president obama spending a lot of time talking about issue, of importance to women voters. that's to focus on those women in swing areas of swing states such as shaker height, ohio, northern virginia, the suburbs of philadelphia, the middle of florida. what's called the i-4 corridor. they're ephhoping even women vos who are ambivalent about the economy will be swayed by some issues they talk about on the trail. >> not surprisingly, the first lady traveling with the president today. a sign of things to come for this team? >> that's right, and her introduction of the president was a reminder to voters of how empathetic the president is, her husband, how much they can identify with his personal life story. these women, michelle obama and ann romney, will play a huge role in humanizing their husbands and we saw some of th
