mike tobin at fort campbell. let many get back to the economy. we have new information that came out todayen to the jobs picture in the united states. the national unemployment rate for the month of april ticked up to 9% up from 8.8% in the previous month. that's the first increase since november. but at the same time the u.s. added 244,000 jobs last month. so that's a decent number. we are being told that is the biggest hiring spree we have seen in five years. if you are confused how these numbers can be heading in two different directions. that's why we goth to this gentleman. hey, doug. >> reporter: how one interprets the job numbers may be a reflection of one's political views. it's a good news bad news story. and something the president's opponents accent waiting the negative. the economy created 224,000 jobs, the largest increase in 11 months. some economists expected a gain of 186,000. some believe these numbers are approaching the points where the u.s. could see a self-sustaining job growth situation. the bad news is the unemployment rate

mike tobin is monitoring the situation nearby. did the explosions actually work, mike? >> reporter: what we've seen so far in key areas like cairo, illinois, the waters have gone down a foot since the army corps of engineers made the dramatic move of destroying the levee last night. and they anticipate the floodwaters should drop about three and a half feet, which should be enough to keep the floodwaters from breaching the levees in some of those threatened areas. the downside, of course, is that by doing that they flooded about 130,000 acres of farm land and flooded about 90 different homes. even here in led better, kentucky they say they have seen the floo floodwaters ease a lite about it. one of the things you can see from looking around here so many homes have tried to battle the floodwaters, they were too powerful, they ultimately lost the battle and moved their belongings up to higher ground. the food waters are amazing, they have passed the record set in 1937, jenna. jenna: just looking at the water and also just thinking of the power when the water was released

mike tobin, our reporter, is joining us live to tell us how all of that is affecting the search-and-rescueefforts. how is it it? >> reporter: well, it seems like the weather has lightened up. we still have some rain dune here. we have a lot of lightning. the winds never got this strong with the second batch of weather. what it did for a time is stop the you screws looking for survivers. what amount of debris i can show -- i ke somehow -- i can show you. you have all of the scars piled on top of each other. one thing i can show you -- one thing i can show you, the amount of depth of destruction here. this tornado, traveled about six miles on ground. you can see this armageddon- like scene behind me. as you can -- as you see some of the lights flashing, there is are the emergency crews going through the debris. the latest death toll figure we have is 89 people killed by the force of this tornado but that number is anticipated to rise as the crews go through the debris. it was not the most strong category of tornado that came through here. it's estimated right now atin' an e firefighter-or 4.

mike tobin is in ledbetter, illinois.is an incredible story and it's controversial. >> we have seen the water go down about an inch or so. it was just in time for the couple that built this house. michael and mary baldry. what they also built was a sand bag wall to try to keep the floodwaters out. this sandbag wall failed. the floods came into their garage and were just starting to reach the floor joist in their house when the levee was blown and the floodwaters started to shrink. they have neighbors who didn't get so lucky. it looks like they lost everything. but they say that's the risk you take when you live along the river. >> any time you live near the river or water, sooner or later it will get you. it always has. >> reporter: the relief they have over on this side of the river is the pain of the farmers on the missouri side. 130,000 acres and 100 homes were flooded. we learned those farmers are filed suit in federal court. they are going to get some relief in terms of crop insurance. but what they wants is some rec
