i did want to ask perhaps todd to address this. the way the department explain this in the past has been that, given the budgetary pressures, the department had to think about all the ways that you write your operations and look at where you can make a change -- look at the ways that you run your operations and a look at where you can make changes. i know it is a difficult task. the project a proposal that came out at a lot to do with meeting that budgetary pressure. from my understanding, as the conversations and proposals went for word, from the staff's perspective, the idea of this proposal actually had the opportunity to actually improve services in a way that we felt that we were limited with the current deputies that we have. not saying that they are not good security guards, but that there was an opportunity to do more. i wonder if todd could come up and speak to that. >> very good, thank you, supervisors. it might be helpful to go back a couple of questions, maybe with president chiu articulating a sense of disconnect about

. >>> nbc's chief white house correspondent chuck todd joins me now. chuck, it is friday evening, tuesday is the deadline. talk about what kind of weekend this will be in washington and how this will play out. >> reporter: well, it is going to be a long weekend. in fact, there is even a joke that maybe they'll bring cots into the united states senate. here's what's going on now. tonight, lots of back channel negotiations between senate democratic leader harry reid and senate republican leader mitch mcconnell. harry reid has to file a bill by midnight tonight to try to guarantee a couple of votes and get this bill out of the senate. after he amends it, his version of this bill, and back to the house by monday. why? because the house probably needs a good 24 hours to get it passed and on to the president's desk in time for the midnight deadline, august 2nd into august 3rd. what are we watching for? tonight, at least five republican senators we know of have publicly talked about working with harry reid on this compromise. lisa murkowski of alaska, bob cor

what do you see if you look into the chuck todd crystal ball? >> i think it was going to be sunday at the earliest that we saw some actual movement on negotiations. if boehner had sent over his bill and if he does, basically save boehner's skin on this, fighting reid for at least 24 hours. and then sometime saturday, it will be clear to mcconnell that he's got enough republicans on his sided that are just tired of this. we already heard some of the frustration with the tea party boil over in john mccain's speech a couple nights ago. he's speaking not just for john mccain. there are a lot saying let's cut this deal and go home. so i think by sunday we will see this plan come together. now, the question as i go back is who will have more leverage. i think already reid and the democrats will have more leverage simply because it's clear whatever boehner does to try to get it through this side of the house, and he may not, he may end up just pulling the plug on it, it's going to be so hard to get through the senate that reid will find republicans to

brian todd reports from washington. >> reporter: a law enforcement source tells cnn looking into the news corporation is now a high priority, so high that the fbi has already launched an investigation. the source says the probe is focusing on allegations that murdock's employees or associates may have hacked into phone conversations and voice mail of september 11th victims and their families. anyone acting on behalf of news corporation is being looked at the source says from the top down to janitors. frank loudenburg also believes news corporation violated federal law. >> would you want to hold hearings? >> certainly that would be a serious consideration. i'm waiting now for a return from the justice department. >> reporter: in canvassing capitol hill, we've learned of growing sentiment for congress to delve into the activities of rue further murdock. most of those calls are from democrats. murdock is a big backer of republicans. if more momentum builds for probes, there are cautionary tales for lawmakers, reports that the tabloids sometimes turn the tables on those who investigate t

kelly o'donnell, chuck todd. we'll keep watching, and thanks to you both. >>> of course, we are just back from washington where we spent yesterday on capitol hill, all over capitol hill in fact. nbc news cameras were given special access for a special broadcast this sunday night. we talked to nearly every member of the leadership, including the gop leader in the senate, senator mitch mcconnell of kentucky. and i asked him about a hot topic, no tax increase in any of these plans being discussed. >> why shouldn't rich folks pay more? >> they do. they pay an extraordinary amount more. and, in fact, about half of americans don't pay any income taxes at all. that isn't a sticking point. the president, in signing a continuation of the current tax rates back in december, made the argument that republicans have made, which is that raising taxes in the middle of a recession is not a good idea. i don't know that anybody thinks the economy's in better shape now than it was six months ago. but all of those issues are being d

todd jones, u.s. attorney for minnesota, who is a national leader of this effort on the task force and is also a national example to the fraud enforcement that he does in his home district in minnesota. as u.s. attorney john described, the task force has a broad membership and mandates focused on the solar array of financial fraud. that includes mortgage fraud, fraud, securities and commodities fraud, it also includes those efforts that are designed to help the economy recover. and to address those who would seek to defraud those efforts around the country. as more fully detailed in the task force annual report which the chairman described, there are many ways in which the task force has been very successful within its first year. i want to highlight a few of them and then discuss more them with you. as senator grassley correctly noted, the task force is very broad. that comes with a challenges. it also comes with strength. one of the great strengths of the task force is training and information shari
