stuart: back to todd and shah with the market now down 130 points.h gilani, have you ever seen anything quite like this before? i've never seen such rapidity of up and down movements. 55 minutes into the trading session? >> not in a bull market, no, i haven't seen this. reminiscent of the action we saw in 2008, that volatility and those swings, but in a bull market, no, this is unprecedented in terms of this volatility. not surprising because mechanically, i completely understand, and i don't know that viewers understand or individual investors understand this. this is all mechanical, this is a function of the types of funds that trade these days, trade volatility, as volatility spiked based on bond prices spiking, volatility in bonds spikes, that sent triggers sell-offs in stock, caused volatility in stocks, more selling. and you had all of the volatility sellers, stuart, people selling volatility and correcting premiums from selling futures on volatility, thinking volatility is going to remain at 10 in terms of the vix, in that spike, all the peopl

joining us now for a preview of the show is the moderator of "meet the press," chuck todd. chuck, good morning. >> good morning, dray. >>> unfortunately, this pattern of school shootings has become very familiar for us in the u.s. and nothing seems to change. we thought after the murder of 20 children at sandy hook and six adults, something would change. that hasn't happened. could florida be the difference this time? >> look, it's possible we're at a tipping point moment. the cynic in me says, in washington nothing is going to change on this front after having -- after the sandy hook experience. first graders getting mowed down wasn't going to change the culture, what would? but we have had three of the worst mass shootings take place in the last five months. combine that with after parkland, you see an activism from the students, something we haven't seen after the shootings before. these students are mourning, but they're angry. and they're -- these are very mature high school students. they're very aware of the world being raised on social media. more connected than any

. >>> let's bring in our political director, the moderator of "meet the press," chuck todd. there's a lot to make of these indictments and the new terms in the mueller investigation. the president seems to be looking at this as a clean bill of health. where does this go from here? >> well, look, i think, number one, the mueller indictment was intended to be, as one prosecutor called it to me, a speaking indictment, meaning they know they're not ever going to get these folks in a courtroom to charge these russians, but it's more about explaining it to america exactly how they did it, almost ceding an explanation of what exactly mueller has been looking into. so in that sense the indictment is very explanatory and may get rid of some of the conspiracy theories that surround this probe. but the odd response by the president tonight where they're more focused on the idea that there was no evidence of collusion in these indictments rather than asking the question of what do we do now and how do we punish russia, i think that's a bad look on the president. it looks like he's more

chuck todd is nbc's political director and moderate of "meet the press".huck, walk us through this. there are reports that chief of staff john kelly knew about the alleged abuse in the fall. that the white house counsel knew far before that. donald trump saying he learned recently and made that decision. came out and said porter says he's innocent. i have to remind you he says he's innocent. is there a fallout because of this? is there any chance that john kelly leaves the white house? >> let me start with the john kelly part of the question. i think he's vulnerable here the president was getting impatient with john kelly, starting to call around and getting antsy about him, before this week. i think this week could be one of the final straws for john kelly. and it could simply mean that the president is just tired of john kelly. if you look at his pattern going back to the campaign. three campaign managers. he's on his second chief of staff. basically the average tenure of being the president's right hand is about six to nine months and john kelly is on m
