david: todd, i want to stick big you, you mentioned the magic word, copper. we have a chart showing gold and copper prices year-to-date and it is like a mirror image of each other. gold there going straight up practically and copper going straight down. explain in more detail the significance of this particularly what it means with regard to china. >> well, you know, copper is a industrial, it is used to build house, buildings and plumbing. so we're not seeing a demand for copper. as you know, one of my main complaints we're not seeing growth and this is in evidence that we're not seeing growth, so copper is becoming oversupplied and underdemanded which becomes a problem. david: let me be more specific. i wanted you to go in a slightly different direction. copper is used in china as collateral for trade. 60% of all the copper in china is actually used as collateral for trade. so, the fact that there's a selloff right now, that indicates to me a big changes going on inside china and and changes, traders probably should be worried about. >> i think it is someth

todd. so republican david jolly defeats alex sink. that's a race the democrats should have won. what does it mean, how do you read this? >> this is a case where you had the testimonies had the better on the ground organization and campaign if you look over a lemont period. this was a special election, so everything got shortened a little bit. the republican candidate, david jolly, this was the fourth choice of the national party. they tried to recruit a whole bunch of other people. his first name was lobbyist as you and i both know. being a lobbyist is usually a four letter word. so everything on paper on the ground was advantage to the democrats, it's a swing district and swing state. they had the more experienced candidate. and what happened is what was going to trump what. national environment versus on the ground organization. and national environment, the political environment in that district, which is mirroring what we're seeing in our own bomb which poll which is the dual message of anti-president and apity health care was enough to fire up republican voters. but the big

chuck todd and howard fineman, editorial director for "huffington post" media group. david jolly beat a very strong democratic challenger, alex sink, in a special election down in tampa, florida. his message was simple. a vote for me is a vote against president obama and the health care law. the democrat talked about working with republicans to fix the problem with the law. turnout was a major issue in jolly's favor, 180,000 people voted yesterday. a little more than half the turnout in 2012 when barack obama wins in the same district. let's do the diagnosis. chuck todd, looking at the numbers, modest defeat for the democrat in the seat that was what? where would you put this? >> it is a pure swing district. about the exact number he got statewide in florida, alex sink carried this district when she ran for governor in 2010 and that was a race decided by less than a percentage point. it is florida's swingingest swing seat that you could have come up with. it has always been one that democrats for years have said when bill young retires, is no longer there, democrats have a

todd akins. people feel they need to talk better about this issue. >> david, people feel when you look at these issues just bad statements politically, but they were accurate about where a lot of the party is. >> right. if you look at what's been happening in the states, they've been very active in prohibiting abortion -- not prohibiting abortion but restricting abortion in all different creative ways. the six week ban in alabama and north dakota, the 12-week ban in arkansas, these are flatly unconstitutional. these are extreme measures that will never become effective laws. they are symbolic measures. they impose costs on people in the state. a, it sends a signal that abortion is not welcome here. b, the state is going to wind up footing the bill for these legal challenges that are going to be successful. so the taxpayers are going to have to pay. if the people in these states want safer abortions, they need to look at policies that will double the number of clinics that amy hag strom miller has. she operates safe clinics that are woman centered and if the people of texas, the people of alabama want

todd. chuck, first to you. what do you see as the bigger story behind david jolly winning -- hardly the best candidate, a lobbyistas criticized from even within republican circles, over alex sink who had run for governor, was well-known in florida and lost. >> well, i think it's a reminder that national environment and outside money, these are the two big advantages republicans have generically going into the start of this cycle, seem to be the difference makers. in a two-point race, you can claim boy, if they had done this right, done this right, but at the end of the day, jolly did not run as good of a campaign as sink. the democrats, particularly in the beginning were much more organized, much more focused on winning this district. the outside money at the end, the national environment at the end seemed to tip the scales. it's hard not to look at it. then you look at our new nbc "wall street journal" poll and you see the same dynamic playing out here. republicans are going to take away from this victory, that they can run on health care and run against the president and this is a universal message that can bot

todd. let's get to my "first reads" of the morning. i feel like we've had the first game of the nfl season, the midterms if you want to call it, after last night's special election. republican david jolly narrowly won a special election in florida's 13th district. it gives republicans a big victory and puts up a red flag for democrats hoping a strong candidate and campaign can overcome a difficult national environment. jolly beat democrat alex sink by just 3,500 votes, winning 48.5% to sink's 46.6%. the libertarian candidate pulled in nearly 5% of the vote. >> obviously, you've heard the results and they were not the results that any of us wanted. i have spoken to david jolly and congratulated him on a hard-fought campaign. >> jolly's going to have to run again for the st. pete area discorredi district in the fall. it will be tougher for him with the turnout. he becomes the 64th member of the congress sent to the house by a special election. jolly, a lobbyist and former aide to congressman young, was introduced by bob barker and walked to the podium to the theme song of "the price is right." i kid you not. >> -- help control the pet population. have your pets spayed or neutered.

david axelrod. and chief white house correspondent and political director and host of "the daily rundown," chuck todd. the nbc/wall street journal poll, not great news for democrats. let's talk about the special election last night. on the republican side going up against the best the democrats had, it was some would say -- republicans say a referendum on obamacare. the republican won. break it down for us. >> was it? >> the basic question was going to be can a campaign overcome a troubled atmosphere? i think in this test, in this one place, atmosphere trumped the campaign. if you just take it campaign to campaign, candidate to candidate, you had the democratic campaign and candidate outspend the democratic campaign and candidate 4-1. then you had outside groups particularly candidate health care. it proved to be very, very effective nationally. and so atmosphere trumped campaign. welcome to the mid terms. the mid terms are a giant special election that aren't going to look like the presidential and all of the senate battles are going to be in places that democrats are going to wish looked like flori
