i interviewed officer todd rhodes earlier this afternoon and he said it was their decision and they just had a change of heart and decided to let the public know what happened that day. they didn't want to damage any part of the investigation initially, but decided this morning i got a call from the brunswick police officer, todd rhodes, who said he would be releasing the 911 tape and releasing it to cnn, so this is the first we're hearing of those calls. again, fred, there were no eyewitnesses. the account of what happened came initially from the mother but as you see from the calls there were several people that heard those gunshots and did call 911. emergency vehicles responded and between 100 and 125 officers were on the scene after the initial report. >> you just underscored there were no eyewitnesses that have been revealed to us or investigators but then what led investigators to these two young people as suspects? >> reporter: that's a great question. i asked the police department after the press conference yesterday. i said how can you be so sure? how can you be positive that th

>> reporter: well, don, i just got a phone call in fact from officer todd rhodes, just got off the phone'll have a press conference at 4:00 p.m. i asked him if they had any suspects or persons of interest in custody. he said, only, quote, you have to be there. what police are saying varies slightly from what the mother is telling us. the police say that they have more than 30 leads in this investigation. they also say they have no suspects so far in custody. now, what happened yesterday, happened about 9:30 a.m., a few blocks from where i'm standing, the mother, i interviewed her earlier, she told me she was walking, just a normal day, walking in the morning, strolling her baby along, when two young boys approached her. she said she's never seen them before in her life. she said they tried to rob her. she said there are eyewitnesses who saw what happened. in this press conference, just a short time ago, police told me that there are a lot of rumors and discrepancies about the information being disseminated. it seems as though, don, this information, these discrepancies are coming straigh

in fact, we spoke to officer todd rhodes. he's a public information officer in brunswick. he says the police have still not been able to locate that handgun used in the attack. they conducted three search warrants yesterday, don. so far they have come up empty-handed. they believe though they have the suspect's -- that allegedly did this in custody. i asked them how can they be so sure? how can you be sure you got two suspects when the mother was the only eyewitness. they said they were able to go on the physical description given by the mother. also attendance records from area schools. they found out who was missing in class one day and were able to track down these two suspects. 17-year-old demarcus elkins and a 14-year-old juvenile whos not been named because of his age. i want to get back to the interview with the mother. she invited us into her home and mist west has suffered so much already. she lost an 18-year-old son in new jersey in 2008. she said she just got back to a point where she was able to have a child only for something like this to happen. i asked her w
