now for a look at your national and regional weather, let's look at nbc's todd santos with the weather channel forecast. >> how would you even know your dog's ears are beyond the average coon hound? they're already big enough? we could go on forever. i want to take you to what's going on to something else that has a wide reach. it's what's left of what once was tropical storm lee. now the remnants have been kind of mixed up in a frontal boundary channeling the moisture northward. one piece of improvement is happening across the southeast, we're on the drier side of things, back towards new orleans, mississippi, yesterday, were drenched with rain. ten-plus-inch rain totals. now we're starting to see the areas where the potential for severe weather, north carolina, central south carolina and extending back into portions of virginia today. beyond that, you see all the rainfall, that's a 12-hour loop worth of radar. it's not incredibly heavy each hour. about when you have that many areas of rainfall, flash flood watches and flash flood warnings, in the watch areas we could see some potenti

. >>> now for a look at your national weather, we turn to meteorologist todd santos. did you see that video? >> look at everyone's face there i'm suddenly not hungry. >> the last guy -- >> it's painful to watch. i don't know how they do it. good morning. want to look at the tropics. we'll talk about some ties to what's going on to our weather here across the lower 48. only one thing in the atlantic with a name, that's tropical storm felipe. that was ophelia. wanted to mention this. you can see that moisture moving up towards the carolinas, that set the stage yesterday for some areas in carolina to pick up over three inches of rainfall an hour. when you talk about hurricane hilary, still a major hurricane off the central mexico coastline. it's likely to weaken. it's expected to turn north. some of the moisture it's been churning off the pacific could get into the four corners by this coming weekend and the coming week. that could have some impacts. texas today likely on the quieter side of things. a few light shower here's and there. back towards the gulf coast, we hav

and now a look at your national weather with todd santos. that's the kind of wrorkout i could get my head around. >> especially for early in the morning. >> they need to set up those hammocks in the hallways. >>> well, there's a lot going on. considering how we just started off the show, talking about fires, torns, everyone again some of the issues with tropical systems, especially this past weekend. last night the hurricane center issued their final advisory on the system, so it's kind of switching to just a mid latitude system, it's traveling along a frontal boundary. what you you really need to know today is that we're still dealing with heavy rainfall, a big threat no plaflash flooding. where you see the red box, that's the tornado watch box this effect up 7:00 central time. as some of the bands rotate on shore, you may see brief torns spin up. so if you live across the southeast today, even including portions of the pan ham handle florida, that you have a way to get your warnings. again, lowest level of your home, away from windows. the

now for a look at your national weather, we turn to todd santos. quick moves. >> lucky dog. >> eahe's fine. >> scramble the chopper, we have a dog on the ground. we need to see this from the sky down. let's look at the radar from the sky down of sorts. still some of the same features we've been following for the last few days, since late last week. that upper level cutoff low, the jet stream deposited that near the great lakes and it's been spinning there. the jet stream well up to the north. we'll continue to see the showers associated with the upper level low myself. also a frontal boundary back towards the mountains that will trigger showers over towards the east. want to bring on the water vapor image imagery. some of that is streaming northward, you see a lot of that wrapped up towards the east coast. dry air would show up in orange, really not showing up at all. you talk about the moisture in the air, especially across the tri-state area. you bring in a front from the west, and many of us are waking up to sunshine, but then a chance for thund

now for a look at your national weather, let's turn to todd santos. good morning, todd. >> it's just a pbad looking mascot. >> go with a strawberry. >> or a swirl. >> exactly. it just made things a little complicated. they're like we neff even heard of these guys. we're just trying to sell ice cream. >> well, speaking of the swirl thing, let's take a quick look at the atlantic. oel for a i can't has madeophels a tropical depression. i mention it primarily for our friends in the windward islands. it's slowly moving off towards the northwest. bermuda may be one of the areas that could see impacts there and potentiallies canadian maritimes, but that's another system expected to recur before getting to the east coast of the u.s. the big reason, this. again, we still have that upper level low and a trough that will be set to help move that out of the area especially as we approach this weekend, but that will also block anything from actually moving in from the atlantic sight. we still have a moist atmosphere across much of the east coast. that will help us

todd santos is here with more on that right now. l, craig, just kind of a miserable weekend, at least for a good portion of the gulf coast, including southern louisiana. we're now seeing some of those areas improving. however, you see where a lot of rain is headed, up through northern alabama, eastern portions of mississippi. we have some flash flood warnings in place. also want to note that red box. that's a tornado watch until 4:00 p.m. central. if you're either in or near that box, make sure you have a way to get tornado warnings during the daytime today. if one is issued, lowest level of your home, away from windows. the other threat is the rainfall. we are going to see a stripe of some areas six-plus inches. in some cases, even nine-plus inches, especially through northern alabama and the mountains of north carolina. that will be what can trigger some flash flood potential. where you see the string of green going up the appalachians, all the way back through eastern tennessee and central pennsylvania, those are flash flood watch

hurricane churning in the atlantic and the gulf of mexico, and we are sieve ejust receiveds from todd santosm the weather channel. we are talking about tropical storm nate and maria as well, right? >> yes. of course, katia, the hurricane name that won't go away at this moment. and you know, alex, i want to mention the system or the set-up that allowed basically all of this rainfall to fall across portions of say the mid-atlantic and down back into maryland and up into new york, that upper level low and that is what blocked katia and kept the system off of the coastline and now the system is moving farther away from land and i did a quick measurement and it is over 270 miles, the center of the storm from nantucket and moving further away. this is a category 1 storm moving northeast at 29 miles per hour, and it is expected to accelerate so in the u.s., this is a storm that we don't have much of a concern for, aside from the numbers at the long island sound where the numbers are down the nine feet, and nantucket where the wave heights are holding up. and still some rip current through the gulf

we check in now with the weather channel's todd santos, he joins us now with more.dd insult to injury for those along the eastern coastline. >> it could, thomas. especially considering folks at hatteras island, residents, are getting back in today as of noon time, vacationers are not allowed back in until the 17th. katia will come close enough to the coastline potentially to have some effects, if not the potential for some showers. lee is actually causing some problems right now in the lower 48 especially the southeast. heavy rainfall, flash flood warnings up through portions of mississippi, northern alabama as well. the tornado watch goes until 4:00 central time. a substantial threat for tornadoes across a few states including portions of the panhandle of florida. flash flood warnings are in red. we all know a number of these areas are heavily saturated. i mention that, then you look at kat katia, as we go through the next couple of days we'll watch the system get fairly close to the coastline. still a lot to be determined with the track but it is one to keep a ver

the weather channel's todd santos has the latest for us on that one. >> good morning, thomas.ics as jim mentioned pretty much getting into the peak of hurricane season at this point and that's a look at katia. last couple of hours we've seen the eye really clean up. again a re clear shot of the center of the storm. you see where bermuda is and where the bams are. as far as the track of the system is concerned, the reason we are keeping a very close eye on it, the expectations is it could be potentially major hurricane by tomorrow, right now it is a category 2 with 100-mile-an-hour sustained winds moving off to the northwest at around 12 miles per hour. there is a look at where we expect this system to be thursday at 2:00 in the morning. at that point talking about a category 3 storm. then a trough off the northeast should help to turn this system fairly quickly farther on off to the coastline. at the moment not having at least landfall expectations though if you keep an eye on the track itself, if it did manage to kind of take the western edge of that forecast track, you would
