go to christie todd whitman or chris christie, there is a long history of republicans getting reelectedn the state. actually that is an uphill battle. i don't know why that is the case here, maybe like massachusetts, new jersey, we'll entertain, keeping republicans in office, maybe not all the time with democrats running the whole show. that aside, do you think inflation issue is actually trumping the mention of trump? >> absolutely. i think that is one of the number one reasons why you are seeing these two republicans running so close to their democratic opponents in two very blue states right now. i think it's because both republican jack ciattarelli and glenn youngkin in virginia focus on kitchen table issues on the economy. both of them have been really disciplined when it comes to staying on message and democrats are really ignoring those issues to focus on making this broader argument that republicans are not trusted to govern. that is not resonating that will be a sign for democrats heading into the midterms. neil: sarah westwood, thank you so much for catching up with you. to pu

interesting is we have this op-ed in "the new york times" today from former governor christine todd whitman and miles taylor calling on republicans to vote for democrats, centrist democrats, giving a list of who would be the smart candidates to support in 2022, and probably specifically any, quote, rational remnants of the gop. i wonder if you would envision sort of democrats and republicans coming together here in a moment like that. is that still possible today, errol? >> it's possible, erica, but it's highly unlikely. you know, the rational republicans are a small and shrinking tribe. they're all but extinct in many parts of the country. politics is not just a matter of listing your preferences and then rationally picking the candidate who's going to bring you those items. there's passion. there's personality. there's an element of frankly mob sentiment if you look at really how people do politics, in particular, how donald trump tries to stir up crowds. i mean, what happened on january 6th was not a rational outbreak. and yet you see all of these officials who ought to know better pledg

miles taylor, and former epa administrator and former republican governor of new jersey, christine todd whitmanor, to you first, this is quite a step. this is quite a step. how did you come to this decision that you would implore other republicans to support democrats? >> because i believe in the constitution. and it is time that our elected officials remember they took an oath to that, not to a party, and what i have seen is that unfortunately donald trump has created what i would call a -- it is just a cult. there isn't a party anymore. if you don't have a core set of values, if you don't have a platform which they didn't adopt at the last convention because he didn't want them to, the only thing you stand for is whatever he tells you on a particular day and that is not my definition of a political party. and this country needs two centrist political parties. it is important to mention we also say that democrats should look to their left and where they see radical left candidates, they should support a moderate republican. it goes both i ways. but our interest is in the republican party to re

christine todd whitman and thomas kaine. they were all reelected in very heavily blue state.ing. tom bevin, "real clear politics," cofounder there. tom, amazing in this bluest of blue states, democrats have a devil of a time getting reelected governor. what do you make of that? >> yeah. i mean new jersey is one of those states like massachusetts and others which is very, very blue but doesn't have a problem electing republicans at the governor level but this is you know, murphy is running for re-election and his approval ratings remain pretty high. this is a state again that biden won by 16 points just a year ago. virginia was 10 points, a little closer down there and murphy is, again, terry mcauliffe isn't the incumbent there. sort of the defacto incumbent but murphy is running this race, i think biden is, his agenda is drag. why you're seeing this race become a lot closer than we would have normally expected. you mentioned emerson poll with 6 points. a monmouth poll came out early this morning has it at 11. and the trend as you mentioned is in ciattarelli's favor. still a l
