for details on how tokyo markets are starting the week, ram ramin mellengard joins us from the tokyo stock exchange. how are investigators? >> we're seeing tokyo bucking the trend. we're seeing it it in a little reversal there. although we're seeing the nikkei trading a little higher. investor sentsment is being over-shadowed a little bit by geopolitical events by ukraine and gaza. it has meant that investors are happier to keep funds in what they see as safer also sets such as the yen as well as government bonds. in fact, the yield on u.s. 10-year treasury is now trading well below 2 1/2%. >>> now, this also has overshadowed corporate earning season in the u.s. coming up later today is a very big purpose. a lot of japanese companies which make kpoentss that go into am produ apple products will be a big factor. now, a quick reminder, also, that from today, the tokyo stock exchange was reducing the unit price or the tick price, if you will, the stocks can be traded to less than one yen. the exchange is hoping new rules will increase investors choice on how to buy and sell shares. it's

here in tokyo the nikkei seeing gains fipshing at 15,296. some brought back recent decliners but trading was relatively light. in china climbed nearly 1% and finished at 2,066. many auto shares were bought. singapore's benchmark finishing lower. that was mainly because of slower growth in the production of electronics and cars. >>> japanese authorities want mobile phone carriers to ease the grip on the market and would like to do away with something called sim lock making it difficult for customers to switch subscribers. smart phones are tethered to a single carrier. users in japan have to buy a new phone. officials at the communications ministry asked a panel of experts to look at the issue and recommended they be scrapped saying the locks are one reason smart phones are among the highest. the average consumer pays right around $200 a month. ministry officials are expected to finalize a change by the end of the year. >>> japan's biggest business organization is urging member companies to appoint more women as managers. the federation plans

. >>> tokyo's nikkei did decline. it was lower by 0.3%, 15,164. that's the lowest close in just about two weeks. a stronger yen hurt overall sentiment today, and that put a drag on some of the exporters. the index, in fact, seeing a weekly drop of 1.8%. it fell every single day this week. and over in jakarta, the key index there closing down 1.3%, just about, 5,032. the decline coming after hopes for the country's new president had pushed up the index 4.3% over the past four trading days. still, investors a bit cautious. they're waiting for the official outcome of the presidential election. >>> well, tokyo government officials looking to the u.s. now, and they're seeing a way to raise some money. they're calling on american executives to invest in their city in the lead-up to the 2020 olympics. the officials hosted a seminar in new york for dozens of investors and businesspeople. they said more and more opportunities are popping up in their city in the years leading up to the games. they said many international companies have head offices in tokyo

let's go to ramin with a full update for us and joins us from the tokyo stock exchange. ramin wharks are you seeing over there? >> yes, indeed. given the events k4 have unfolded here, investors really moving out of stocks and we're seeing that definite lid here in the first few minutes of trading. the nikkei is down over 200 points. and the broader topix down by 1.4%. japanese shares ended thursday pretty much flat without any clear indication. let me just go through a few of them. stocks began running into heavy selling in europe. we also saw moscow's benchmark index shedding almost 4%. gold is usually an asset that investors pile into. the price has jumped. and the yield on the u.s. 10-year treasury note fell below 2 1/2% nearing the lows for the year. quite a clear cut reaction. >> ramin, it looks like investors are getting out of the dollar. what do you think of that? >> the dollar-yen pair is a very big focus. the dollar-yen i'm talking about. investors selling to buy the yen. 101. 101.18-to 21. and the sharp drop in the yield on the u.s. treasury noets, which i jus

analysts believe prices in tokyo are an indication of what's happening across the country. those figures are up this month by 2.8%. the 15th straight monthly increase. policymakers at the bank of japan say the increase in the consumption tax is partly responsible. the sales tax went up in april from 5% to 8%. officials at the central bank say the cost of corporate services is also going up. it increased in june by 3.6%. the officials pointed to a labor shortage. they said it was becomin for ma hire temporary workers. they said the government is spending more on public works and redevelopment projects, and they said that's adding to labor costs. prices for corporate services have gone up for 11 straight months. >>> and the labor shortage is hitting restaurant chains in japan. sales fell in june for the first time in four months. some pubs were forced to close because they were unable to find enough staff. officials of the japan food service association say sales at major restaurant changes last month slid 1.8% from a year earlier. pubs and taverns reported a decline of 7.6%,

how is this going to affect us in tokyo and the rest of central japan? >> as it continues to move north and shifts north and east there is a little bit of a ray of hope because we are expecting the system to start falling apart as it moves toward the north and east. however that doesn't mean that we're going to be completely dry as we go through the next few days. in fact we are expecting quite a bit of rain from this particular system as we go through thursday and friday here in tokyo. here's a look at neoguri as it continues to move to the north and eventually the north and east. the outer bands are starting to touch kyushu. already rain saturated we're going to see more rain as we go throughout the rest of the week. look at this, anywhere from 184 millimeters up to 374 millimeters in some parts of kyus kyushu. that's a lot of rain and it's going to -- we're expecting from 200 to 250 millimeters of rain after we go through another 24-hour period. so we have all this moisture coming in from the south. and because of that, tokyo and also parts of osaka,

harry fawcett reports from tokyo. saturday night into sunday morning - tokyo's biggest dance music video, there's a line-up of djs playing to an enthusiastic crowd through what they advertise as the best souped system -- sound system. the japanese way of life has a particular mind-set on sound and detail and space and light and energy. >> if you knew nothing about the laws, you would assume it's normal. >> reporter: the law in question was passed in 1948 when dance clubs were regarded as centers of moral interpret attitude. to this day a venue licence requires strict conditions and restricts dancing after midnight or at the latest 1am. tokyo's nit clubs are famous the world over, and we are in the biggest one. they are not allowed to call it a club. what the people are doing is illegal. for many years the law was regarded as a quaint relic and ignored by police and club owners. a murder at a club led to a crackdown on venues across the country. for months this man has been working with politicians to redraft the law.

it's friday, july 25th in tokyo. israeli forces have struck a school in one of their latest strikes on the gaza strip. hundreds of women and children had flooded to the school to find shelter. 16 people were killed. about 200 wounded. civilians in gaza have been finding somewhere to hide during weeks of israeli air strikes. many came to the u.n.-run school. a spokesperson says officials had formed the israeli military. they launched their aerial offensive more than two weeks ago and then they moved in on the ground. they engaged fighters from hamas in the latest battle. they knew exactly what was going on t. >> they asked the military to allow civilians to evacuate the school. but he said the request was denied. the israeli military says it cannot rule out the possibility that rocket fire from hamas may have fallen on the shelter. more than 780 people have been killed since the offensive began. the fatality includes at least 181 children. militants in iraq have attacked a prison convoy in baghdad. the militants ambus

wall street's strong performance increased risk appetite among investors in tokyo. china's shanghai composite seeing gains just under .2%, 2070. trading was relatively sluggish ahead of the release of the country's second-quarter gdp data on wednesday. >>> the number of new condominiums put on sale in the tokyo metropolitan area fell in the first half of 2014 for the first time in three years. the drop mainly reflects a slow-down in demand after a buying spree ahead of the consumption tax hike in april. real estate researchers say more than 19,000 condos went on sale in tokyo and three neighboring prefectures between january and june, down 20.2% year on year. it was the first drop since 2011 when that major earthquake and tsunami hit japan's northeast. in june alone the number of new condos totaled more than 3,500 units showing a 28.3% fall. it also marked the fifth straight monthly decline. the researchers predict underlying demand for new condos will be robust due to the economic recovery and lower mortgage rates. they say the number for the entire year is likely
