tokyo stocks did open sharply high letter. from the start of the year investors have been whiplashed by the swings up and down. the nikkei fell more than 9% through thursday. the shanghai composite, 15%. concerns about oil prices, china, and terrorism, that's weighing on sentiment. at least today the swing seems to be upward here in tokyo. the nikkei average gained at one stage more than 300 points. the index is currently up more than .75%. 17,3, 72 a gain of 130 points. the benchmark rose after wall street staged a turnaround overnight on a rebound in oil prices. globally traded crude oil benchmarks saw a slight bounce. and the energy sector here in tokyo is really leading the stock gains this morning. checking on currencies the dollar got a lift from the rebound in oil and u.s. stocks. going above 118 overnight, it had hit a four-month low just monday in the upper 116 yen range. the euro dipped below $1.09. right now at 1.0866-0868. the dollar gained after another federal reserve official said the steep plunge in oil and low

i'm catherine kobayashi in tokyo. >>> investors are worried oil keeps falling to multiyear lows and stock markets in new york are going down with it. overnight on wall street, the dow jones industrial average was down more than 560 points at one stage. let's go directly to ai uchida from our business desk. >> people are worried there's too much oil available but not enough buyers. on one hand oil producing countries are not cutting back on their supply. iran will be another major exporter. on the other hand, economies of countries like china once a guzzler of oil is slowing down. the benchmark wti futures went below $27 per barrel, the lowest level since 2003. the index closed at $26.55 in new york trading hours, declining 6.7% from tuesday's close. still, oil did rebound quite a bit in extended hours, briefly going above $28 a barrel. trading was also volatile on the dow, but by the close, they had trimmed some of the earlier steeper losses, it ended the day down by 1.5%. but here in tokyo, many investors are hunting

you're watching "newsline," live from tokyo. we are joined with this weather's update starting with how farmers in south africa are struggling with severe drought. >>> drought in south aica is at therisis lel. 2015 was the driest year on record so farmers are struggling with the situation. we have footage coming out of the country. much of south africa remains in the grips of a drought after experiencing the driest year on record in 2015. the hardest hit area is part of the country's maze -- maize belt. corn is the staple food in south africa, especially for lower income families. usually a net exporter of the grain, as much as 5 million tons of maize may have to be imported this year. the ongoing el nino weather pattern is being blamed for the drought. good news. january is the wettest month of the year and on tuesday and wednesday south africa had heavy rainfall so this is definitely beneficial and then daytime thunderstorms are expected, so hopefully the situation will improve. el nino has been bringing wet weather to the wes

kafumi terui, nhk world, tokyo. >>> "newsline" comes to you live from tokyo. i'm james tengan. for you out there planning to be in tokyo this weekend, expect warmer than average temperatures. jonathan oh joins us with this hour's skrup date. will central japan ever see average or below average readings this year? >> hello. i think we may see a little bit of a cool-off as we go into the beginning of next week. but for the next few days, we actually will see a slight warming trend. what's happening is that frontal boundary that brought us some rain to okinawa on wednesday is now pushing toward the east, and behind it we're seeing a little resurgence of warmer air coming in. not a huge warm-up expected, but we will still see temperatures moving up just a bit going through the weekend. by monday, another area of cold air that will help drop temperatures off so we should be back to what's normal for this time of year. as we move forward in time, not a huge big difference in terms of the forcing mechanism, what's happening over japan. we do have this northwesterly flow that's moving

dollar during tokyo trading hours. worries reman over the chinese economy and the hong kong dollar hit its lowest level since august 2011. that's about four years ago. and the chinese gdp after all grew at the slowest pace in a quarter century. market players are still fleeing to safer assets like the japanese yen. one analyst i talked to said if the yen's appreciation accelerates that would affect japanese equity markets in the lo term, especially automakers. i'm mayu yoshida reporting from the tokyo stock exchange. >> thank you. >>> moving on to other markets. in china, the shanghai composite rally more than 3% ending above the key 3,000 mark for the first time in three sessions. weak data fueled expectations that the government is under pressure to roll out further stimulus measures. sharp gains in china improved sentiment across the region. the hang seng jumped 2%, the biggest one-day gain in two months. some market players picked up share which is had been oversold. seoul's kospi advanced 0.6%. the s&p asx rebound

into the weekend in the tokyo area. it will continue snow and subzero figures into the weekend. it's a very different story across the south. we have been watching a tropical system near the equator. this is a hurricane, the earliest hurricane on record for the central pacific basin. surprisingly, it will remain as a hurricane and then it could get very close to the equator and then it could pass the international dateline over the weekend. if it does so, the system could be changed to typhoon. it's a very unique system. then further down towards the southern hemisphere, there is the cold front moving across southern australia and the system will likely affect new south wales on thursday. this is a very heavy rainmaker. probably up to 150 millimeters rain is likely along with the risk for thunderstorms, gusty winds and even some tornadoes. watch out for the weather. as for temperatures, quite warm on wednesday, for example, melbourne is at a high of 41 degrees. down to 19 degrees on thursday. watch out for your health.

for the details, we go to our business reporter at the tokyo stock exchange. >> share prices in tokyo climbed back over the 17,000 level right at the open. we saw mixed trade data out of japan, but the nikkei managed to extend the gains it made on friday. let's take a look at the closing levels this monday, january 25th. the nikkei gain 0.9%, closing at 17,110. the broader topix also rose 1.3% to 1,392. the rebound in oil prices is a big factor and japan petroleum was up after u.s. crude rallied around 10% on friday. one of the top performers has been japan tobacco. shares are up 7.4% after the firm announced plans to raise the price for one of its main cigarette brands. it was a different story over at toshiba which suffered heavy losses. the company is still recovering from last year's accounting scandal. and media reports say it plans to sell part of its chip business and is already taking bids. now while we're looking at embattled firms, air bags maker takata is down 9.8% following news of yet another recall in the u.s., this time for 5 million vehicles. the announcement follows r
