right after workers for stellantis, the old name stellantis was chrysler, a plant in toledo, they make the jeep chero key, union -- cherokee, we both drive them, my wife and i, one saved me after a kid driving hit the side-my car while sitting and virtually no injury. i went to the picket line friday morning, talked with a lot of workers. i know many of them. there are 6,000 at this plant. 1,000 -- actually 1,100 of these workers at this stellantis plant, at the jeep plant rb on a tear -- are on a tiered wage system where they make fewer than $19 and something an hour, some have been there one year, two years, some five at six years, yet they make less than $19 an hour. the reason for that is when chrysler and g.m. were in serious trouble, the government held, the union in order to save these plants and save essentially the automobile industry, they did major givebacks of their wages and benefits. so management insisted and the workers went along to major pay cuts, set up a tiered wage system. new workers, hundreds and hundreds, over a thousand at a plant of over 6,000 workers were mak

as for stellantis, the average weekly production at its toledo plant is higher than ford and gm and toledo is where we find phil lebeau with the latest on the negotiations. what do we know now? >> reporter: not a whole lot of movement. we know as we speak, representatives from stellantis and the uaw are getting together. you were talking about that economic impact. keep in mind, the plants that are being hit by the uaw right now, they're not the most profitable plants by the big three in the united states. they're important but not the most profitable. here's the strike impact. remember, the plants that have been hit so far in the strikes, you're talking about midsize suvs, popular ones, as well as midsize pickup trucks, but not the most profitable. about 15% of the big three u.s. production. the full-size plants continue to operate. there are some key issues. i know we're talking a lot about 40% versus 20% and 21%. beyond hourly pay and where the raise ends up over 4 1/2 years, the other thing to keep in mind are wage tiers, cost of living adjustments and restoring pensions, all of which

cnn's dave cohen is in toledo, where you see striking workers behind you.ing to be on the picket lines? >> reporter: well, brianna, i hear from worker after worker, over the past few days i've been talking to them, they're ready to strike. with the national economy the 5800 workers here in toledo to nearly 13,000 across the country. they're getting strike pay, $500 a week. far less than they would be making. they don't have a salary right now. they're making that money from the union. right now, we're on the picket line outside of this stellantis jeep factory. one of the biggest issues for stellantis uaw workers is tiered pay, people on the same line doing basically the same job are making different amounts of money. i want to bring in one of the workers, tim, if i can bring you in here. this is tim. tim, we were talking to you before, you were saying you're one of those temporary workers you're capped at $19 an hour, is that right? >> $19.28 yes. >> what are the biggest issues and what are you feeling? >> one of the biggest issues is just full time. right

gabe cohen is on the seen in toledo, ohio. as you speak to workers there, are they in this now?y in it for the long haul? >> reporter: well, jim, that's what every one of the workers we've spoken with have said. they've been saving money waiting for this moment knowing it was possible they were going to go on strike. you can see behind me hundreds, thousands of these workers -- 1,500 members here are attached to that stellantis factory. they're all here today signing up for their strike pay. take a look down this line. you can see just the scale of how many workers are being affected by this right now here in toledo. again, they knew this might be coming, but it's no doubt going to be a difficult task living off $100 a day for the foreseeable future. it's unclear at this time how long this could last. we know that right now there are about 15 picketers outside each gate. they're preventing anyone from getting in and out. they're going to be here 24/7 in the upcoming days. i want to bring in one of the workers. this is abby ryan and her daughter journey. you're a single mom. you

gabe cohen in toledo, thank you so much. let's talk with tammy kim, a contributing writer at "the new yorker." she's been covering the industry for quite some time now. tammy, that's pretty significant to hear about the ripple effect. already ford is going to be laying off people. is that a direct consequence to this striking? >> yes, certainly this is something that the union is weighing. i think that's behind the strategy of the rolling strikes, where you have just the starter strikes at the three facilities. these are, of course, assembly plants, not manufacturing plants. but with every kink in the supply chain as we saw in the pandemic, that leads to delays in shipments. i think the union is sort of preparing this, waging their bets around having the support of the public, not disrupting the supply chain more than it needs to. >> as gabe was saying there that 80% of the strikers' demands are not being met, according to representatives of the union there, so do you think the two sides will be able to find some common grou
