[applause] power banks to you, tom brokaw. what a marvelous -- our thanks to you, tom brokaw.a marvelous job you have done as a master of ceremonies. and for all you have done to shine a light on the greatest generation. thank you all for your beautiful tribute to my husband and for all that you did to make this day possible. god bless each of you for what you have done. now, ladies and gentlemen, when secretary salazar asked me to introduce bob dole. i was tempted to talk about his many accomplishments and each of his remarkable qualities. i am resisting that temptation for two reasons. first, such an endeavor would keep us here until sunset. second, if i did so, i would only be repeating what you already know. you know the remarkable courage bob exhibited when he wore the uniform of our country, and the courage he has shown every day since his life was changed in the hills of italy in 1945, 66 years ago this thursday. you know that america's veterans could not have asked for more committed or more affective advocate -- effected advocate. you know that this plaque was richly

is here to tom brokaw.e has done as much to tell the story of our generation is anybody i know. i doubt the memorial would of been here without tom brokaw's influence in making world war ii veterans realize that they did provide a great service and they did make sacrifices and they brought everybody together. and i want to thank fred smith of headaches, mike co-chair, who cannot be with us today, but without whose credit -- incredible dedication and generosity this memorial would not be finished. it would be started but not finished. i want to think can salazar and pat roberts and mr. kempthorne and others who joined forces with senator inouye to make this possible. there were others who participated, but i was at walter reed for 11 months last year, and i missed all of the action. about who was working on this. if i missed anybody, i apologize. i want to recognize of more recent colleague and secretary shalala, and the distinguished public servient with a passionae commitment to american veterans. we cut.

tom brokaw joins us now to talk about some of these results.ys, it's heartening after everything this country has been through that people still believe they can reach the american dream. i want to put a result up that 63% said they were still fairly confident, extremely confident, they can reach the american dream. i guess part of it is how they define that phrase. >> i think that's always the issue with the american dream. it's a phrase that did not come into play in this country until 1931 in a book called "the epic of america." he described it as not only wishing for a motor car or higher wages, but the social order, that everyone should fulfill their capabilities as to their innate strengths and bb judged for who they are, not the circumstances of their birth. that's an appropriate description of the american dream. i suppose now that my children will have a better life than i do. if we were to add that to this question, there may be some greater reservation in america. it is i think testimony to however the continuing appeal of this count

late last week on this broadcast you'll recall tom brokaw reported that the saudi arabian monarchy is so unhappy with the obama administration for the way, as they see it, it pushed out mubarak that they sent senior officials to china and russia to seek expanded business opportunities with those countries. continuing his reporting there over this past weekend, tom was given rare access inside the kingdom. here now his report from riyadh. >> reporter: saudi arabia is the richest and most powerful country in the arab world, hugely important to the u.s. because of its oil reserves, and now surrounded by populist rage on all sides. a sunni country, it is the home of mecca, the birthplace of islam, and takes pride in its orderly society. even so, there have been protests by the country's shiite minority against saudi rule. but they were quickly put down. saudi's king abdullah surprised almost everyone by sending his country's military into bahrain to suppress shiite demonstrations in that country. the king and other saudi officials are known to be unhappy with the obama administration for

tom brokaw back in a familiar spot for a lot of us tonight in baghdad, iraq. tom, thanks. >>> turning now to japan, where this was another day of thousands of gallons of radioactive water openly flowing into the ocean near that damaged nuke plant. engineers still haven't been able to find the leak. measurements taken there yesterday showed the radiation levels near the leak were millions of times the legal limit. our report tonight from nbc's lee cowan. he's in tokyo. >> reporter: at its peak the radioactive water gushing out of reactor number 2 was pouring into the ocean at a rate of 30 gallons a minute. on saturday radiation levels were measured at 7.5 million times the legal limit. on monday it was 5 million times the legal limit. fish caught last week south of the fukushima plant contained levels of radioactive iodine high enough to cause concern. so much so the japanese government hastily announced today that it would be setting a nationwide standard for an allowable limit. at least 25 countries have already restricted imports of japanese milk and produce.

then at christmas time i got one check for $100 from tom brokaw and then i saw my climbing ger and i sold it and i sold my car for $500 that i got from my grandfather in a seedy area in oakland. by string i o spring i had only $2,400. my mother invited me to come and talk to the kids. when i got ready to leave, a fourth grader named jeffery looked me in the aye and he said i've got a piggy bank at home and i'm going to help you build that school. west side school raised 65, 300 pennies. it wasn't the celebrities or the sports heroes or movie stars or if i lan throw pears but children reaching out to children half way around the world to help them build a school. what can you buy with a penny the bay area? probably nothing. in montana you can buy 1/2 tootsie roll. but in afghanistan you can buy a pencil. it's not that's so important but education gives a child hope. you know, if you fight tear riz her rorism it's based in fear but the real enemy is ignorance that bleeds hatred. here in america, afghanistan, africa or pakistan. the way to overcome that i think is through education and
