tom brokaw back in a familiar spot for a lot of us tonight in baghdad, iraq. tom, thanks. >>> turning now to japan, where this was another day of thousands of gallons of radioactive water openly flowing into the ocean near that damaged nuke plant. engineers still haven't been able to find the leak. measurements taken there yesterday showed the radiation levels near the leak were millions of times the legal limit. our report tonight from nbc's lee cowan. he's in tokyo. >> reporter: at its peak the radioactive water gushing out of reactor number 2 was pouring into the ocean at a rate of 30 gallons a minute. on saturday radiation levels were measured at 7.5 million times the legal limit. on monday it was 5 million times the legal limit. fish caught last week south of the fukushima plant contained levels of radioactive iodine high enough to cause concern. so much so the japanese government hastily announced today that it would be setting a nationwide standard for an allowable limit. at least 25 countries have already restricted imports of japanese milk and produce.

then at christmas time i got one check for $100 from tom brokaw and then i saw my climbing ger and i sold it and i sold my car for $500 that i got from my grandfather in a seedy area in oakland. by string i o spring i had only $2,400. my mother invited me to come and talk to the kids. when i got ready to leave, a fourth grader named jeffery looked me in the aye and he said i've got a piggy bank at home and i'm going to help you build that school. west side school raised 65, 300 pennies. it wasn't the celebrities or the sports heroes or movie stars or if i lan throw pears but children reaching out to children half way around the world to help them build a school. what can you buy with a penny the bay area? probably nothing. in montana you can buy 1/2 tootsie roll. but in afghanistan you can buy a pencil. it's not that's so important but education gives a child hope. you know, if you fight tear riz her rorism it's based in fear but the real enemy is ignorance that bleeds hatred. here in america, afghanistan, africa or pakistan. the way to overcome that i think is through education and

i was on the anchor desk with tom brokaw and brian williams.hts of my 20-year career. but black folk waited 400 years for the moment. they wanted him to win. if i can take malcolm x's phrase, by any means necessary. to talk about holding him accountable though i had done it for every presidency, there was something about this black guy who they wanted elected. they didn't want to hear accountability or critique about him. i didn't change. black america did. that's part of what it is to learn. you have to stand in your own truth with courage, conviction and commitment and know over time it will catch up with you. >> you were called a traitor, a sell-out. >> i was called everything. and president obama is the best example of failing up in this country. he ought to be the poster child. when he ran for the house seat bobby rush beat him three to one. he ran for the senate. his opponents started falling off like flies. in 2000 he can't get into the senate building for the democratic convention in l.a. and in 2008 he's president of the united states.
