she's accused tom brokaw of sexual harassment. to have you. >> thank you for having me. >> you were waiting and calling for this internal report to come out and they seemed to be dragging their feet or at least not responding in a timely fashion, then you came forward with your accusations against tom brokaw and lo and behold the internal report came out. do you feel some sense of satisfaction for having forced the issue? >> i think the internal report was deeply flawed. that's a problem, because women have contacted me in recent days to say that they did not feel that they could fully speak candidly to the nbc lawyers and others have contacted me to say that they didn't feel that they were properly interviewed. when you have an internal investigation, when you're talking to the lawyers for the company that signs your paycheck, women can't speak freely and that was the case here, and so what nbc really needs to do is hire outside counsel to properly investigate this. they haven't done so. cbs has managed to do so with the sexual h

tom brokaw was just talking about this, people from the midwest would do education or go to silicone or got to california, or any of the coast and come back. now it's so expensive. silicon valley, new york, and education is no longer the root it was to mobility. so there's much less fluidity. the coastal elites is a misnomer because they're not all coastal and they are not all elites. that refers to professors, journalists and others. they are also not all white. people like me, whether you're a republican or democrat you view yourself as tolerant. you know minorities and believe in religious freedom. he probably think of yourself as not tribal. you believe in human rights and individual rights. this group tends to be very tribal. there is so little intermarriage between this coastal white but mixing with like my own family. my husband is jewish, it's like the ethnic divide between the two white tribes. >> you can watch this and other programs online at booktv.org.

in my conversation with the former correspondent at nbc news, she claimed tom brokaw assaulted her inusly denied this accusation. he said i met with lynn va vester both on the her request 23 years ago because she wanted advice with respect to her career at u.s. the meetings were brief, cordial, and appropriate. and i made no romantic overtures toward her at that time or any other. after the interview, brokaw denyed any assault of new kind the in either meeting with vester. vester told us she was speaking out now because she wants to have the conversation about what happened. nbc universal said they have reached out to ms. vester via her attorney to discuss the allegations and so far she has not accepted our offer. vester's attorney told us i have made it very clear and advise counsel for nbc that my client is more than willing to be interviewed as part of an independent investigation. her offer to take part in an outside investigation remains open. but at this point nbc has not taken up my client on that offer. she said the matt lauer investigation was handled internally. they said th

frank, there has been some skepticism, and one of the women -- the woman who came out tuesdaying tom brokaw says there should be an independent investigation. where do you stand on the idea of these media companies or newsrooms having to look inward and not always being comfortable doing so? >> it's always difficult. it's always very controversial. i think i generally come down on the side of having an independent, outside set of eyes on it. after all, these are news organizations, they stand for transparency. they depend on their own credibility and the trust of the audience. and so anything that they can do to reinforce that, also to anticipate where those problems are going to be, they should do. so when it comes to something like this, they can and should bring in outside eyes, whether they're hr or other types of legal experts who can provide both the creditability to the investigation and the fullness to the scrutiny that is brought intermittently to media companies that spend, especially in the news business, their full time trying to put scrutiny to everybody else. >> right, exactly

i was talking to the president of the university, i said, "i think it was, like, tom brokaw, or petertry. it was actually ted koppel." so i was like, i -- [ laughter ] i knew it was one of those guys, so clearly he didn't leave much of an impression. >> jimmy: no. you have multiple news organizations including our own with allegations against matt lauer, tom brokaw powerful men trying to figure out how to put systems in place. i want to go through the response. the corporate office, the president of news division said they were not aware of any harassment by rose. you also have a former executive producer for cbs this morning saying he honored the wishes of the one woman who reported an incident with him. is that a correct characterization of the responses in your story? do you expect more? >> i think it is interesting because david roads was in public last month and he was asked about if the network had protected rose. he said very broad statement there was no knowledge here about rose. i think what our reporting shows is that there was knowledge. we talked to women who did flag concerns to managers as early as 1986 and as recently as april 2017. there was no official hr complaint made. and i think that that is a discussion or a topic that deserves perhaps more discussion. when a woman goes to her manager and says this happened to me or i was f
