i'm tom brook, and welcome to talking movies, as we look at hollywood's forthcoming summer movie season. mad max is one of my top on the list. deadpool 3. i am excited to see that. the deadpool movies are really funny, and i like to see - a movie that's funny - with other people, so we can all laugh together. mr president, do you regret the use of air strikes against american citizens? and talking movies will also be reporting on the dystopian action film, civil war, a movie following us journalists in the midst of civil disorder, an early—in—the—season big hit, critically praised, but not everyone liked it. i don't think it's a very revealing, revelatory or deep examination of the practice ofjournalism. also, diversity in the film industry — how much progress is being made? in some areas, concerns that representation is getting worse. only 30 films out of 100 featured a female lead or co—lead. last year it was at 44%, so there's been a shift down. plus, how film fans are exploring new ways of watching movies in small spaces called micro—cinemas. you really don't need more than folding

tom brook: if you walk along the croisette here in cannes — that's the walkway that hugs the beach —ch dogs, like ginger here. and dogs are a very big theme at the film festival this year, both on the red carpet and in screening rooms. la fabuleuse actrice meryl streep. meryl streep might have been the big star on opening night, but so was messi, getting masses of attention on the red carpet. the dog appeared in the legal drama anatomy of a fall, which won an oscar for its screenplay. the film was launched at cannes last year, where messi won the palm dog award, given to the best performance by a dog in film at cannes. the annual award was created by toby rose, who was from the uk more than 20 years ago. in these few short months between last year's palm dog and now, messi has become something of a superstar. namechecked at the baftas, given a seat at the oscars, and this year has been all over cannes, including the hallowed red carpet, with his microphone, doing showbiz interviews. what an amazing career. this year is, without doubt, the doggiest cannes ever. true, messi wasn't the

from cannes, tom brook reports.arguably most prestigious film festival gets under way. outside the palais des festival in cannes, where films are shown, tourists and movie fans gather. it's the most important film festival in the world. i like when all the stars, they come to one city. but there's been uncertainty in the air at cannes this year, with a threatened strike by behind—the—scenes workers, including projectionists and ticket sellers. and there's also massive chatter about a possible metoo protest in which a french website may reveal the names of significant figures in the french film industry and their alleged predatory transgressions. the rumour is that one of the investigative news websites in france is going to drop a big report, naming sort of about ten to a dozen film—makers, producers, actors who are guilty of some type of inappropriate behaviour. the festival is trying to keep the focus on movies. one of the more eagerly awaited films in competition this year is megalopolis from legendary 85—year—ol
