jimmy carter suddenly went on this deregulation been seemingly emulating her i mean that's from from the way that i'd seen it what did you learn what what why seventy eight in your mind well tomi think the story actually goes back before that and it's kind of fascinating to me because i was running the new york times washington bureau during that period and what i didn't realize was that there had been a tremendous reaction in the power system in washington before carter came to power if you think back to the earlier era of the sixty's in the early seventies civil rights movement women's movement environmental movement consumer movement antiwar movement strong labor movement all those movements were pushing american government to take care of the interests of the average people of the middle class and we had widely shared prosperity in that time but business was feeling the pinch there were business leaders saying what about ralph nader in the consumer movement are making us put in more safety measures and label our products more fairly the women's movement is making us pay women more because they weren't paying women anywhere near as much as women are getting paid today and
