and greg, i ask you, why you thought that republican parties leader should not say to tom donohue, yo you know we'll run e republican party, you really are not doing us any favors, by making the party more exclusio exclusionary than it is accused of being. >> part is about money, lou. chamber has a lot, they can spread it around. maybe have a little bit of perspective here. i would guess there is no more than 4 or 5 tea party members in the senate, i would guess in house out of 233 republicans, maybe 40 are tea party members. not as if they are like the most dominant force in town, they are a factor. lou: if they were we would have a different conversation. but while they are in the minority it has been a pivotal influence in particular in outcome in 2010. and again you are talking about more than, you know talking about just about 10% of the house. you are talking a difference, 6 seats make a difference on whether or not republicans control. >> in the en established republicans and tea party republicans will get along much better, they have a common interest issue they want control o

[ applause ] >> thank you very much, jack. good morning, ladies and gentlemen. thank you for coming to the chamber. i occasionally, when i do a major speech here, i think about this room and i think about the ceiling. the history, the opening of the western world, the flags, this is the hall of flags or for those courageous people who set out on a voyage to achieve what nobody thought they could achieve, and the end result is the united states of america. i keep that in mind a little bit today while we're thinking about our own challenges and our own opportunities. assessing the state of american business and taking stock of the new year's challenges and opportunities, it's a tradition. we established it over 15 years ago. this year i'm pleased to report that the state of america's business is improving and our economy is gaining strength. since the great recession officially ended in july of 2009, the american economy has struggled to regain its footing. the recovery has been the slowest and the weakest since world war ii. th

let's talk to tom donohue.rce. >> good to see you. >> it's the life blood of our business in the united states. that's what you tried to ride herd over and make sure that things are -- make it easy for things to hatch. over here each different country the dynamics are different. i went to a micro brewery. it started up well in switzerland. you can't do the same in greece or italy with all of the entrenched labor and regulations. what do you do when you come over here? you can't tell people how it should be done? what do you do, listen and try to gain some understanding of what? >> well, if you haven't -- if you stopped learning three days ago you're a dropout so you better listen. second, we have all sorts of members that are here or people that could be members. we're a global organization. we have large and small companies from around the world that belong to the chamber because they do business in america. as american companies do a huge amount of their business around the world and that includes small and m
