tom hanks. that's a great movie and a great company. i want to thank terri freeman and the national civil rights museum and the museum of memphis which sponsored this amazing event which would amaze a lot of people certainly around dr. king's table in 1968. i am humbled by your commission to offer reflections today of what the legacy of dr. king's movement means for today. i think in short what i'm saipg is that i think the legacy about dr. king, from dr. king's legacy is about our future if we are lucky to make it so and not about our past. that is because it goes so deeply to the principles that are either going to take us forward or that we will be lost. so i really want to try to convince you in a short amount of time by reviewing dr. king's career that we are poised on a precipice of whether or not we recover its principles which are essential to our well being in the future. you're entitled to ask why me. why a white southerner born in atlanta who grew up in segregated atlanta is here talking to you about the legacy of martin luther king. it's a fair question.
