tom fuentes has been with us, formerly of the fbi, throughout the afternoon analyzing what has been takinge just a few minutes away from the press briefing, what is it that you want to hear that will paint a more complete picture of what happened today and what the response has been like and what's next? >> i'd like to hear the chief verify exactly why they're sure that this is a lone shooter and no one else was involved although he said it earlier, again, to reiterate it would be a good thing, as well. but i don't know that we're going to hear about the motive. you know, i think that even though there might be great speculation or that the shooter knew one of the victims or when the shooter walked into the location, other people recognized that he was related to someone or a friend of someone that was working there, i don't know that he's going to release that kind of information just yet. but i think it's, again, going to reassure the public that the mall is going to be safe, possibly say at what point the mall will reopen. if it's going to be available to be open tomorrow. and reassuran

we also have former fbi employee tom fuentes, also with us. ck with us, in fact, now out of fairfax, virginia. so, tom, while the police chief made it very clear they are not ready to give an all-clear yet. there are still people inside. this is a methodical process, there is to be very careful. while the police chief said she confident there was a single shooter, it's still unclear whether anybody else involved in this crime may still be in the mall. so give us an idea of just how law enforcement works together on this, because there are many jurisdictions involved here, and how howard county police take the lead to try to make sure that everyone they're in contact with in the mall is an innocent bystander, so to speak. >> the fact chief mcmahon said they believe there's no other person involved, that's a pretty strong statement to make. so i don't think it's just sheer speculation. they've got enough investigation that's been conducted by his people to make a determination that that one person or one or more persons that are dead at the scene

we have on the phone with us tom fuentes. so, tom, being their you're from the washington d.c.h this mall. it was one that i went to as a kid growing up in the area. what do you know about the situation? what are your sources telling you? >> yes, it's a typical mall and there are many of them in the washington area. this in the suburbs of maryland just outside of washington. my question here is do we still have an active shooting situation or is the shooter maybe one of the dead that's already been located by the police. and in that case, then it becomes a crime scene. they'll certainly if there's any -- search if there's any other individuals that may be involved. they'll be reviewing video camer cameras to see what vehicle the person may have arrived in. it could very easily turn out to be workplace violence where someone came back and had vengeance against someone that they worked with or worked for. we don't know all of that. but the question mainly is, is this still an active shooting or has the shooter killed himself, let's say, in the -- in the location of killing the ot

tom fuentes. thank you so much. i know you're not going to go far, because we may call upon you again very soon. erin mcpike, our cnn correspondent is there outside of the mall. erin, i just want to remind people at home, there is a very lengthy delay in our communication now. so there may about great pause before you hear erin speaking after i have stopped speaking. so, erin what more can you tell us? have you seen a lot more people being escorted out, exiting that mall as they try to secure that mall of 200 stores? >> well, fred, we have seen people come out in front of the jcpenney, but a lot of the activity has been around the sears area. we also understand that a lot of people were taken to a theater which is on the other side of the mall, and people who came out on that side were going to a bar in the area, but they're removing people from the mall and taking them to other establishments so that they can meet up with family and friends, and, also, brief investigators on what they saw or heard inside the mall.

let's bring in our law enforcement analyst, tom fuentes in washington to talk us through this.>> good morning, carol. >> so you you were part of the security detail during the 1996 games in atlanta. how worried should we be? >> i think we should be very worried for a couple of reasons. the difference between this and other olympics has been that for the other countries that have hosted in the past, including the u.s., the threat was always external. we always worried about a terrorist group coming in from the middle east or north africa or some other dangerous hot spot in the recalled would. the problem this time is that you are talking about terrorist groups based 300 miles away in chets nia. they don't have to enter the country from halfway around the world. that's the difference this time. you have an internal group that's russia based and they have already promised to do a terrorist act and disrupt the olympics. they have already carried out a couple of terrorist attacks killing about three dozen people in volgograd. this is different this time. it is a very serious situati
