let's bring in aviation safety consultant chris yates and cnn law enforcement analyst tom fuentes.ood to have both of you. let's look back over the first few months of the year. 2014 is shaping up to be the deadliest year in almost a decade in airline travel. does this signal a security problem? let's start with -- let's start with you, chris. >> it signals a particular problem in so much as various of the airch yags incidents that have happened have just caused a heck a degree of consternation in the public i would suppose. and the fact of the matter is that last year, something like 5 billion people traveling on 34 million flights, and only a small percentage of them, of course, have any degree of an issue. >> so, tom, i want to go to you because i know that people are watching this. and we've also had this brief ban on u.s. flights to tel aviv because of the exchange of missile strikes with gaza, obviously. but if somebody is getting ready to board a flight, particularly an international flight, what would you say to them about any, you know, fears or concerns that they might ha

that really falls squarely on the shoulders of the ukrainiian officials. >> tom fuentes, what can dos do there on the scene? >> right now, wolf, what they're there to do is to give advice to the ukrainians about how to go about this investigation, how to proceed if allowed access. if the ukrainians themselves are allowed access. as i mentioned earlier, the ukrainian government wants a full-scale investigation by outside experts to come in and do it but they don't control the ground there. it's kind of an irrelevant point at this time until they get there. the fbi has a full-time office in kiev with a number of agents. and would have already been getting advice about this situation. but you know, a crime scene like this, spread out over 10 miles, you're talking about hundreds of people that it would take to comb the fields, to gather the evidence and then, you know, hundreds more to take care of all of the poor victims that are still lying in the field unattended. so, you know, you would need a small army of people to control that scene and to do it properly. and a handful of european

let's bring in peter goelz and tom fuentes.t the faa and the europeans following the faa decided to ban commercial airliner flights in and out of tel aviv over the next 24 to 36 hours. what was your immediate reaction? and you're an expert. >> i found it to be completely understandable. there you have an active war going on. you've got an international airport where planes are coming in to land and take off. as we just saw, you don't need more than 10,000 or 12,000 feet for a man pad to be very effective. i think it was the right thing to do. the insurance liability of flying in there over this ban is simply too great. >> tom fuentes, what did you think? >> i think the same as peter. what tom foreman just said i don't think has gotten enough attention. these shoulder-held weapons can be taken anywhere. you can put them in the back of a station wagon or a minivan and drive them wherever you want. hamas could go through one of their tunnels, carry one of these in, get in a station wagon and sit outside of ben-gurion airport and c

. >> let's talk more about this with chris yates and cnn law enforcement analyst, tom fuentes. ir rosenschein with us this morning. tom, i'll start with you. for people who are thinking, i'm going to back away from flying for a while, are those concerns warranted? >> i really don't think so, victor. you know, it's still safer to fly than it is to drive to and from the airport, you know, statistically in the first place. it's just that air crashes are spectacular and the footage is spectacular. but if you add up all the onesies and twosies of auto crashes around the world, air crashes pale in comparison. >> okay, so chris, with these recent air disasters, what would you say to people to make them better prepared as they fly, perhaps, especially internationally? >> well, of course, the answer is to just go about your normal business, to turn up in plenty of time for the flight and to accept anything that happens to be thrown against you at the security itself. the fact of the matter is, you know there were 34.5 million flights last year and out of those, only 84, 85 turned into --

our cnn law enforcement analyst tom fuentes, former fbi assistant director. what do you make of this public rollout? why make all these announcements right now? why not do it? >> my concern turning on the laptop like that is if it's an explosive device, what if it explodes right in the line and kills all the people around you. true it didn't get on an aircraft, but if designed to go off that way, it's not a good thing either. >> how do you deal with that? >> if you have a design used in the past like the printer cartridges where you excrete the explosive in the laptop, that is a possibility, too. powering it up or off i don't think will be the end all, be all preventing this. you can have a detonator disi disguised as a thumb drive and later insert that into a computer. the explosive isn't just being able to get it on to the aircraft. it's a way to make it go off. that's one of the concerns they are looking at. >> historically, al qaeda made no secret it wants to damage the u.s. economy, blowing up a u.s. airliner with a lot of passengers onboard presumably c
