. >> "today in the bay's" tom jensen is live at blossom hill road where workers and students could be headed for a headache. it takes a while for the road to get back to normal. >> reporter: it does. highway 17 at least all lanes both on highway 17 southbound are now open, so that's a big relief for commuters, but blossom hill road here is still closed on both sides of highway 17, and this could create some big headaches for parents bringing their kids to raymond fisher middle school, which is just down the street here, especially for those folks trying to get across highway 17 to get over here. that big rig carrying excavators was not able to make it under the overpass at blossom hill road, damaging the bridge decking and causing some inspections overnight. we still do not know when it will be open again. traffic was backed up for a few hours and all lanes on highway 17 southbound were not opened until this morning. frustrating night for drivers. >> i went back around the other way and highway 9 is jammed all the way back so i couldn't get there, so i had to walk. >> we're fortunate

we're live in santa rosa, tom jensen, "today in the bay." >> that's nice that they're finding the reasono celebrate as well. tom, you were here with us that morning on "today in the bay." talk about that a little bit. remember they were evacuating that hospital? >> reporter: gosh, i remember that and i remember that iconic shot as we were sitting there talking that really explained it all there at kaiser santa rosa, as a gurney was coming out of the flames it looked like almost, with ivs hooked up and oxygen, and nurses and other staff from the hospital actually putting patients in their own cars and taking them to different locations, other hospitals or areas where they could be treated for whatever it is. it was quite a night, and then into the morning hearing those explosions. i know we went back and forth talking about that. we didn't know what was going on and then what we saw, just the devastation, even just on the back side of the hospital, where hundreds of homes were just flattened in a matter of what seemed like just an hour or so, the flames just moved so quickly. it was prett

tom jensen: people are actually running for their lives.ve got a patient on a bed with iv's hooked up that they're bringing out right now. people inside the hospital were desperately working on a plan to get everyone out, even as their own families were rushing out of their own homes. jacob: my daughter answered the phone and she was screaming as they were driving. tom: with his wife and daughter safe, dr. jacob wile decided it was time to evacuate the hospital. they called kaiser san rafael and asked them to make room for more patients. jacob: so she said, "how many?" and we said, "well, all of them." tom: but how to transfer more than 100 patients from one hospital to another? a nurse had an idea: use employee's personal cars to start until the buses arrived. john kay: there's no place to stop and turn around, and there was fire on both sides. tom: three santa rosa bus drivers were evacuating seniors from nearby centers in coffee park and fountain grove. john: there was no way you can--we can control. you just need to get out of its way.
