meteorologist tom kierein is following all this heavy rain. tom, good morning. >> good morning eun and joe. yes, we've seen these waves of heavy rain really increasing in intensity over the last three or four hours. they've been marching in south to north and continue to sweep through. this is the radar over the last three hours. we've seen pockets of yellow and orange. those are the areas of the heaviest rains that have been coming through. also thunder and lightning over the eastern part of the chesapeake bay. and on the eastern shore of the chesapeake bay they are geing heavy downpours right now. now the radar locally is showing a few pockets of moderate to heavy rain in fairfax county and montgomery county as well as ince william. another pocket of very heavy rain in southern prince william. all of these are heading off to the north. one band of very heavy rain moving off to the north and northeast, and will be sweeping across the western part of the eastern shore here over the next half hour, or so. when you see the areas of lighter green

i'm meteorologist tom kierein.n this thursday morning, where they've had ves o heavy rain coming through. over an inch and a half of rain has fallen at national airport. southern maryland has had almost four inches of rain. radar showing waves of modere to heavy rain that have been coming through over the last three hours causing flooding. get reports of high water, now many creeks and streams overflowing thr banks in northern virginia, the district of columbia and much of maryland this morning as the waves of heavy rain continue to move on through. in addition we have a tornado watch in effect for the area until 1:00 this afternoon. that meanshat an individual storm cell could proce a funnel cloud between now and 1:00. don't have any reports of that now. just very heavy rain. that will be the big story today with flooding off and on throughout the rest of the day. then tomorrow, after we dry out, late tonight, we'll have the winds picking up out of the northwest. gusting to ound 30 miles an hour. rtly cloudy into

tom kierein is here now with the forecast. tom? >> yeah. came in yesterday. we've had some occasional showers since then. and this morning, we did get a bit of a respite in the last hour or so, but now more rain is beginning to return. as we look a the radar in the last three hours, one wave of rain came early this morning in pennsylvania, but here comes another wave moving in. there's one are of very heavy rain crossing into central montgomery county heading to the north rapidly and continuing to move awa you see the light and dark blue, that is some light rain that stretches across much of virginia now, the panhandle of west virginia, heading from the south tohe north. now, the closer-up view of the radar showing that one area of yellow and orange in montgomery county, that's heavy downpours. don't have any reports of thunder or lightning with that, but that is a band of very heavy rain just about to move out of germantown into poolesville heading towards damascus, laytonsville, that area, others moving north. farther to the south, another batch of orange a

tom kierein, good morning again. >>> good morning, barbara.t the radar over the last three hours we've had the surmgs of heavy rain coming through that caused all this nasty flooding. it does appear we'll get a temporary respite. it's beginning to break out a little bit, just light rain across northern virginia but many locations to the east of washington still averaging moderate to heavy rai in southern maryland, rate along the western shores of the chesapeake bay. but there does appear to be a little bit of a dry period coming through here just maybe some ligh rain for a while this afternoon. however, we could get some more rain later on this evening. some more heavy downpours are possible for the region as we get into the evening hours but between now and then we'll have this rain tapering off so give a chance for many of these creeks and streams to run off but still with all of this rain that we have had, it is still going to take many, many hours for the creeks and streams to begin to recede and, unfortunately, it does appear we'll add so

i'm tom kierein. 63 in washington. 73 later this afternoon. it's only going to climb 10 degrees.-50s in prince george's. near the bay, mid-60s, eastern shore. farther to our west, many locations in the 40s. certainly feeling like an autumn morning. beautiful autumn color showing up. western maryland, some of the high spots. moving into the carolinas. another tropical syst coming our way. this will have another more heavy rn. the leading okay under next west of norfolk, that is movin through virginia. by midafternoon, will likely have rain arrivi here. all this coming from a tropical depression. and upper level winds are screaming along. so it's grabbing some of this tropical moisture way out ahead of the storm and bringing it up along the atlantic seaboard. this could become tropical storm nicole later today. it will likely continue on this same track coming inland as a tropical storm. it's not a major hurricane but it will have copious amounts of moisture with it and bring us three, four inches of rain by middle of the day tomorrow, beginning heavy attimes overnight tonight. and
